For everybody who plays, is interested in playing, or knows somebody who plays World of Warcraft and has somehow missed everything that's gone down in the past two days, check this out. Short story, Blizzard/Activision is planing to force all users to reveal their full names when they post to the forum. There is no option to opt out, and you cannot change your battle.net account name. Basically, if you don't want people knowing who you are, you're fucked.
Not cool. In fact, it's royally fucked up. I've already canceled my subscription over this. It breaks my heart to do so, but Blizzard reps have already stated outright that they don't actually give a fuck. The only language they're likely to listen to is that of money.
I'm not just angry about this; I'm honestly really scared of what this might mean for online privacy, not just on WoW, but in general. I cannot comprehend why anyone would think this is anything but a horrifying idea. I have never had any real problems before - online harassment, yes, but nothing I couldn't ignore - and I would really, really like it to stay that way.
I just...mother of Christ.
