Writing Wednesday: Theme Song Mashup

Sep 22, 2010 21:31

For my Group Dynamics and Effective Speaking class (a gen-ed oral communications class that's pretty much about giving speeches and is way more fun than it sounds), we had to present a famous speech. The professor was very loose on what counts as a famous speech, so besides pieces by presidents and activists, we've gotten poems, movie monologues, and dramatic readings of songs (A+ for you, Telephone Sue). My original idea was to do some cheesy TV show theme song, probably from a cartoon, but then I had the idea to do a whole bunch of theme songs and mash them all together.

Now this is a story all about how my life got flipped, turned upside down. I'd like you to take a minute, just sit right there, while I tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel - Where everybody knows your name. And they're always glad you came and knocked on our door. We've been waiting for you. Here the laughter is hers and hers and his, three is company to boldly go where no man has gone before. A dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas, you've just crossed over into Duckberg.

Racecars, lazers, aeroplanes, it's a duck-blur. Might solve a mystery, or rewrite history. Duck tales, woo-ooo! D-d-d-danger lurks behind you. There's a stranger out to find you. What ever happened to predictability? The milkman, the paperboy, the evening TV? You miss your old familiar friends, the Warner brothers, and the Warner sister Dot. Just for fun, they run around the Warner movie lot. They lock us in the tower whenever we get caught. But we break loose, and then vamoose, and now you know the plot.

It's time to put on makeup, it's time to dress up right, it's time to raise the curtain on the Muppet Show tonight we're moving on up. To the east side, to a deluxe apartment in the sky. We're moving on up, to east side, we finally got a piece of the pie, tossed salad and scrambled eggs. You may seem a bit confused, but baby, I got you pegged. I know you know that I'm not telling the truth. I know you know you just don't have any proof. Believe it or not, I'm walking on air. Butterfly in the sky, I can go twice as high. Take a look. It's in a book.

Here's the story of a man named Brady, who was busy with three boys of his own. They were four men men men men manly men men men. Thunder. Thunder. Thunder. Thunder. Cats. Sunday, Monday, happy days. Tuesday, Wednesday, happy days. Thursday, Friday, happy days. Saturday, what a day, grooving all week with you. We run, we jump, we swim and play, we row and go on trips. But the things that last forever are our dear friendships. Camp Anawanna, we hold you in our hearts, and when we think about you, the thing came apart.

You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both, and there you have the facts of life. But Professor Utonium accidentally added an extra ingredient to the concoction - Chemical X. But it's alright, cause we're saved by the bell. Dance your cares away, worries for another day, let the music play, down in Fraggle Rock, they're a page right out of history. Let's ride with the family down the street. Through the courtesy of Fred's two feet. When you're with the Flintstones, you'll have a yabba dabba Scooby dooby doo, where are you? We've got some work to do now. Scooby dooby doo, where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? I don't know. Can you repeat the question? You're not the boss of me now and you're not so big. You're not the boss of me now the next thing you know, old Jed's a millionaire. The kinfolk said, Jed, move away from there. It's a jungle out there. Disorder and confusion everywhere. No one seems to care, but I do. HEY! Who's in charge here?

George Jetson. Daughter Judy. His boy Elroy. Jane, his wife. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire Schlameel, Schlameizel, Hossenfeffer Incorporated. We're gonna do it. Give us any chance, we'll take it. Give us any rule, we'll break it. We're gonna make our dreams come true. I want to be the very best, like no one ever was. To catch them is my real test, to train them is my cause. I will travel across the land, searching far and wide. Each Pokemon to understand the power that's inside. Pokemon, it's you and me. I know it's our destiny. Pokemon, you're my best friend, in a world we must defend. Pokemon, your heart is true, you're a pal and a confidant. And if you threw a party, invited everyone you knew, you would see the biggest gift would be from me and the card attached would say my name is Shakezula, the mic rula', the old schoola', you want a trip, I'll bring it to ya. Call me, beep me, if you want to reach me.

I read the last speech of the first day, and everyone loved it. I received some high-fives and shoulder-pats and one girl called me her hero and wants me to bring her a copy.
