Two Weeks Notice

I bad looking at my friends' entries about having trouble dealing with their colleges, because my experience has been pretty good so far.

I took some of my high school classes for college credit (Government and English) through local universities, and those seemed to have transferred well. And I'm getting about $14,000 a year in financial aid, plus Brite Flight, which is $2,000 a year that Missouri gives you if you get a 31 or higher on the ACT. And then I'm doing work-study (something with food service, not sure of details yet) for another couple grand a year that goes towards room and board, so my folks really don't have to pay very much. We did early registration, and the tuition check we wrote was for $260.

So, sorry about your credit transfer and financial aid issues. Wish I could offer advice, but I really can't relate. :)

I'm going to Lindenwood University, a private liberal arts college. It's in St. Charles, which is 20 minutes from home, and maybe about 40 minutes from downtown St. Louis. (So that you non-St. Louisians have a frame of reference.) I wanted to stay close to home, so that's a good distance for me. It also brings me closer to my older brother and his family, and my friend Ashley.

I move in in two weeks. We have a couple days of First Year Experience, and then classes start that Monday. I'm excited to see what college life is like and to meet new people, so I'm not really sad about summer break ending.

I met my roommate yesterday. Her name's Tiffany, she's undeclared ("I like everything a little, but nothing enough"), works a lot, likes art, and is an aunt. We don't seem to have a whole lot in common, but she's nice.

We're in the oldest freshman girl's dorm on campus, Irwin Hall. (Lindenwood was established in the 1820's.)

We're on the third floor, which will give us a nice view, but also a stair climb. So that'll make moving day tough. Especially since my dad's a big guy and doesn't climb stairs.

I haven't seen inside the building, so I have very little idea of what it looks like. I've only seen the modern dorms. I don't think it's air conditioned all the way, but it'll be neat to stay in an older building. It's pretty.

I've done most of my dorm shopping, things like bedding, towels, a desk lamp. We have the mini fridge, and I'm taking my fan, the old stereo in the basement, and whichever one of our TVs will fit best in the dorm. We're waiting on a couple items until we see the dorm. I'm shopping around for my textbooks right now. I've found them all at $65 or less, which sounds pretty good.

How's everyone else's college preparations going? Any advice, tips, things I need to bring?

lindenwood, life is pretty great
