I originally wanted to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince at midnight release, but I also wanted to see it with my friends Molly and Ashley, and Ashley wanted to wait for IMAX and Molly was out of town anyway. And I knew that my parents would want to take my brother and me, since that's what we've done for all of them. They're never read the books, but my parents do enjoy the movies.
So that's why I just saw it last night.
I've been on this weird cleaning/organizing kick lately, and I never got around to finishing re-reading the book. (page 175/652) So I don't completely remember most of what happens after they get to school.
It seemed about as close to the book as any of the other movies were. A lot of details were cut out, but that's what I was expecting.
Bill and Fleur weren't mentioned at all. From what I remember when I read Deathly Hallows two years ago, they played a relatively big part, but one that probably could be played by other characters. It could be Lupin and Tonks' wedding, and Ron could run to Fred and George after he deserts the camping trip.
Lupin and Tonks were in the movie, but their storyline was taken out. There's no romance and angst, they just show up to the Weasley's for Christmas dinner and then leave together. And she calls him sweetheart. I'm not disappointed with it being downplayed, since it was really sudden in the book and I wasn't very fond of it. I am curious how they'll deal with it in the DH movies. Wonder if Teddy will still be in. Not integral, but cute.
I want to go to Weasley's Wizard Wheezes.
I don't remember the Burrow burning down in the book, but either way, it made me sad.
I searched for HP Flair on Facebook, and there's one that just says "The scene when Ron was all lovesick!", which is really all that needs to be said.
I also loved Harry on Felix Felicis. :D
A lot of people don't like the new Dumbledore. I like him okay. It's a character with multiple angles, and I think that the first Dumbledore played the warm grandfatherly part of him, and this one is the weird old guy.
I didn't think of this the three times I read the scene in the book, but when Draco paralyzes Harry and leaves him on the train, why doesn't he take the Invisibility Cloak? I understand that he wants Harry to be stuck on the train for hours, but it doesn't seem out of character for him to steal cool magical items from his enemies.
Someone pointed out that Harry and Ginny don't have the chemistry that Ron and Hermione have, which makes sense to me. Even at the beginning of the series, you knew that Ron and Hermione would end up together, so the interaction was probably part of the casting. Harry and Ginny hooking up was a total surprise, so chemistry wasn't something they had in mind during casting.
It's nice to have Quidditch back (for the last time!), but I wish there would've been more of it. Isn't HBP where Luna starts commentating on the games?
The dwarf is apparently Professor Flitwick. Wasn't there a different one in the first movie? I don't really remember, I haven't seen it in so long.
I adore the continuity with Ron's pajamas.
Much love for the cinematography. That opening scene with the reporters, before the title card? Fantastic. And the whole "Is Harry here?" "I think I would know." "Well, his bags are in the kitchen." scene was unnecessary, but the camera angles were great.
Slughorn is noticeably dissimilar from how he his in the book. I like the book version better.
Did anyone else think that all the Great Hall's floating candles extinguishing and falling down was the saddest shot in the whole movie?
The wand-raising tribute to Dumbledore was very touching. I'm kind of glad they took the funeral out, I think I would have cried too much.
I'm going to be a wreck at the Deathly Hallows movies. There's a 90% chance I'll cry at the trailer.
Me and my brother re-watched the fifth movie the other night, and I noticed that the students, especially Ron and Hermione, wear a lot of striped shirts. A lot of striped shirts. Three or four per character in a single film. Harry mainly wears solid colors, but it's stripes for everyone else.
I will be seeing the movie again at some point, and I'll have the book finished then. So I'll have more thoughts later. This is all mainly for my own records.
