(Crossposting this and sending it out to lots of friends)
Well, we did it....most of the way.
The move was intense, but moves usually are.
We picked up our truck on Friday, packed all evening and all day Sat. Our good friend, Mike, showed up on Sat. early and saved the day. We were so stressed and overloaded with getting the inside packed, we couldn't find the mental energy to load the truck properly. It not being Mike's stuff, and he being a good loader, we just brought him stuff and he tucked it in.
Leah's brother Jim showed up and was a pillar of muscle, throwing two book boxes at a time on his shoulders. There were many, many book boxes. And Jared, well, he worked the hardest few days of his life. Loading like a trooper, hauling huge weights, and not complaining at all. We talked about it and he said he had considered things and realized that griping about it wouldn't do any good and it was time for him to learn to handle things like this. I am very proud of him.
We drove up on Sunday, after loading the last few things, almost, (more later). Driving the huge diesel moving truck with Jared. Mike followed us up, in his little car, loaded, Leah in the van, loaded, (the heater fan actually ran until just before we got to Cumberland, and then quit) Me in the 24' truck crawling up the mountains. Putting an automatic transmission in a huge diesel seems so silly and trucks twice the size as me were flying by, due to manual gears. However, I really enjoyed the drive, it being the biggest truck I have driven or been in since my dad's days of being a trucker. The sound of the engine and the vibe was comforting and alluring, reminding me of my childhood in the back of a semi. Part of my mind wants to get a CDL and take up the road...then I came to my senses.
We got in well after dark, and in freezing weather. Only light snow on the ground. Arrived to a leak coming all the way from the unfinished loft bathroom to the basement via pipes. Shut off water in loft and will solve the problem later. We had to unload some as the beds were in the back. Unloading in numbing cold, already numb with fatique. Mike is healthy, but still in his latter half of his fifties. So he was hurting. And the rapid altitude change was just enough to effect us.
Monday arrived with dread, for we still needed to unload. Slow and steady was the name of the day. One piece at a time. Amazing how tired one can become. We thought we weren't going to make it through, and would need to keep the truck an extra few days. However, Mike came through again and our friends son, Damian, showed up at the end of the day and threw in. His family are fellow Rennies at MDRF, live here in Mount Savage and his 6 yr old little brother, Adrian loves Ellawyn. Damian did a good job, especially since when moving, the heavy stuff is in the back, and we finished just as the snow started.
Lots of snow overnight, LOTS, and more coming down in the morning. We knew we were in for it, and Mike decided to go when he could. Pushed him out of the driveway and up the hill, sliding all the way in his little car. We knew we couldn't get the truck returned so we hunkered down for the Valetines Day Eve storm. And got it. All day long. In 24 hours we saw two plows and it built up, but we were cozy. We watched it fall and fall. I spent the day struggling with the computer and DSL modem, but in the end it all worked out and we had a hi-speed connection and wireless home network.
Wednesday, Valetines Day, woke up to 9 inches plus, I stomped a heart valentine into the snow for Leah and Ellawyn,
I was worried about getting the rental truck back. I called up Budget and threw myself on their mercy, getting a free extension. Leah and I shoveled and shoveled, to clear the drive, warmed the vehicles and just in case of a problem I took the Van out to turn it around, facing out the drive. I checked the roads with a little drive and they were TERRIBLE. Slushy ice and snow all the way down to town. We waited, and watched, checking Radar and weather. Finally, after lunch, a break in the clouds and plows came. We loaded up and crept down the mountain to Savage where the drive to return the truck and get some much need supplies and Frig, and washing machine. Our old washer was one of the few casualties of the move, but we were glad to buy a new one. It looks funny sitting next to our old dryer as it's a fullsized new Kenmore, while the dryer is an apt. sized 10 year old thing.
Our frig will be delivered today or tomorrow. Leah is going out for a play group as Ellawyn is going abit stir crazy. The schools are closed around here, so Damian comes up again today to hang out and help some, and well, the house is beautiful.
We will slowly get settled in. Lots still to do. Not the least is finishing the moving. We need at least another small rental truck, to transport the rest, and empty our bus. And then we have to do the cleaning and painting of the apartment per our rent agreement.

Peace to all,
