Some summer time fun with the Wildwoses...

So, we had a bit of fun, there will be alot of pictures...

Read this entry or I will pop this water balloon over this innocent little girl!

TOO LATE!

Now don't you feel guilty? If you would like to know why we would subject such a cute and trusting child to such malicious water torture, you will have to read the rest.

Yesterday was a busy day around the old Wildwose household.

We started off at an frightfully early hour, at least for us, to rush out the door and head for Flintstone, MD. Yes, it is actually named Flintstone and is about 45 minutes east of Cumberland. Leah remembers fondly driving through there every year with her parents on the way to the Hot Rod Events in Cumberland and her brother and her torturing her parents with the theme song to the cartoon. We were headed to there to visit Penny Knobel-Besa, a photographer, and a fellow artist at the Arts at Canal Place, and artist co-op in Cumberland that we are part of. Penny lives out there with her husband, Hilmar Gottesthal, a sculptor and painter. Penny had seen Ellawyn and wanted to take some pictures of her as a fairy. So we picked up our good friends, Jeanna and her boy Adrian. Jeanna is a fellow MD RennFest artist, a jeweler, Echo and Wild Jewelry, and lives in Mount Savage. Penny wanted us there early to catch the morning light.

So here are some pictures I took of the day.

Penny's home is a shed roofed modern, much like ours, only bigger. We liked it alot. Her neighbors say that from the side it looks like only half a house!

The kids were very cute and put up with several costume changes and getting run around, posed and poked. Here is my intensely lovely little girl.

Adrian was dressed as a Wood Puck and lulled the little fairy to slumberland with a idyll played on his flute.

Here is a short video of them.

My absolutely loverly wife, wearing her Faerie Crown, joined in the fun.

I just have to say, I am a very lucky guy. Here is more evidence of that.

Here is Penny taking photos with Ellawyn. They are in the field next to Penny's house. The GIANT sculpted tree in the background is a piece of Hilmar's work. A fairly amazing chunk of wood and apparently the piece on top isn't anchored to the one under it. The picture really doesn't give a true sense of it's scale. They are perhaps 30 yards are more closer to us than it. It's HUGE.

Here is that little girl and her parasol. The dress has a funny story. It was made by my wonderful mother and my wife for Ellawyn for her first year at the Faerie Festivals as a walking toddler. Now, at almost five, it still fits, just with short sleeves and a mini skirt. We affectionately call it the "Cupcake Dress" because she looks like a frosted cupcake in it.

On the other half of their property, they have built a wonderful studio nestled in the woods. Penny and Hilmar share this space, with separate work areas. They said they can go all day in their own art zones, with music and such, just yards apart, but not speaking. Sounds wonderful. Separate but together. Its an artist thing. Their studio is on the Mountain Maryland Studio Artist Studio Tour. We had wanted to be on that tour this year, but missed the deadline. Maybe next year. This is Sanctuary Studio.

Here is Penny's side, her photography studio.

And here is Hilmar's display side. You can see much of his sculpture, in marble and wood here, and some of his abstract paintings. He has a workshop connected as well, for the messy business of chiseling away hardwood, filled with racks of tools and the smell of shavings, but I didn't get a picture of it.

The kids had a blast, and afterwards we retired to Penny's house for ice cream and conversation. The house, like most artist's homes, is filled with the effects of the artistic life. Bric-a-brac and antiques. Art on all the walls, both ancient and modern. Here are the kids, sitting on the couch, admiring the massive fireplace and its host of artifacts. Don't Touch Anything!

I sure do look forward to seeing Penny's pictures.

Now about those water balloons....

I came across This Article on www.pcworld.com, about how to take pictures cool pictures of water from balloons, just before gravity takes the water. They references These Pictures on Flickr. If you take a look at them, you'll see they really are cool. Jared has been studying photography and as my readers know, I am photo crazy. So we decided to see if our cameras could do it. Luckily we had a willing victim...errr...happy child, to pose for us. So lots of balloons and pictures later, most of which are like the first ones at the beginning of this, taken just before and just afterwards, this is the best of the results. The grainy effect is from too high of a an ISO coupled with the shutter speed and a cloudy day. We will try again sometime.

Here is one of our earliest near successes. We caught the water in air, but not in the shape of the balloon.

And here is what is called a "Water Hat" shot. You can see why.

And finally, we caught the shape of the balloon!

Pretty cool, huh? There are a couple of dozen other pictures that didn't catch anything but funny expressions on Ellawyn's face. But Jared and I learned alot about what our cameras could do and Ellawyn got to get wet on a hot day. Around here, we call this homeschooling.

Once we got the picture we wanted, Ellawyn went to swing on our new rope swing, just installed. Still having a few water balloons left, Jared got to work on his marksmanship. Unfortunately, they tended to slap a little hard on impact, as you'll see in the following video.

She was alright. And aren't you glad you stuck around to assure yourself of her safety?
