Pandora Hearts Ch. 61

Since I took so long to review the last chapter, I didn't have to wait long for the new one. The scanslations came out quickly, which is always wonderful.

-- So Gil and the others learn that Duke Nightray died...and that he was beheaded, like the Headhunter's victims. But it happened after Elliot died, so it couldn't have been him. Interesting!

-- So that's why Vincent went to Leo? To abduct him? I didn't expect that, though I suppose it does make sense.

-- Wow. Vincent is the original Headhunter? He made a second, illegal, contract with a Chain called Demios, which came to be called 'the Queen of Hearts' by the ones who witnessed the first murder. That actually explains a lot. He's the one who killed Fred and that Nightray uncle. I'd wondered about that, after we learned about Elliot. All the others, he had a motive to kill...but not those two. Vincent did, though; they were hostile toward him and Gil.

-- So Humpty Dumpty is just a copy of Demios? But I thought it was the Chain form of the last body of Glen Baskerville...is that not right? Hmm.

-- Duke Nightray knew about Leo holding Glen's soul? Interesting. Though it makes sense that he would hide it, until the time was right.

-- Which would apparently be when Vincent came to him, after Yura's party. He told Vincent, and told him to take him away from Pandora. Man...he actually thought that Vincent would do what he asked? After the way the Nightrays treated Gil and him? =/

-- Yikes. The Nightrays were using that orphanage to conduct research on Chains? Those poor kids. =X

-- Well this is interesting...how Elliot came to be the primary contractor. He wasn't, originally. Some kid contracted with Humpty Dumpty first. But he died...possibly from the experiments being conducted on him. And I guess Elliot was the next one to contract Humpty Dumpty, so he inherited the core of the Chain and became the primary contractor. Bad luck for him, that's for sure.

-- Wow. Vincent asks Duke Nightray why he didn't destroy Humpty Dumpty when Elliot made his contract. If he'd done so, he could have saved Elliot's life. And the bastard's reason why he didn't? Because Humpty Dumpty was unique, and he though there was potential there. They didn't have Raven then, and he was obsessed with getting back the Nightray family's honor. Yeah. He let his own son die, because of that. Evil bastard.

-- And I have to admit...it's a little odd seeing Vincent like this. Usually, he's the slimy, scary one. But here, even he thinks Duke Nightray is despicable. Which, considering some of the things Vincent's done, rather says a lot.

-- Wow. So it was Vincent who poisoned Gil that time. I'd thought of it before, since Vincent's used poison in the past, but I didn't think he'd actually hurt Gil like that. Guess I was wrong.

-- Geez. And here, Duke Nightray actually pulls the 'after all I did for you' card, when Vincent says he's going to kill him. 'Cause, you know, he was so kind and all. =P Of course, Vincent rips that apart. He knows that Duke Nightray only took him in so he could learn about the events of 100 years ago. And now we learn that he only took Gil in because Vincent told him that Raven had been tied to Gil for 100 years...that's why the Nightrays couldn't find a contractor for him.

-- And then he kills him. We learned of his death a chapter or two ago, but now we know how it happened.

-- That's a little surprising. As Elliot lay dying, Vincent says that he really liked him. I knew Gil cared for Elliot, but I never really got the feeling that Vincent cared either way. Though, it looks like he largely cares because Elliot made Gil happy. He even thanks him.

-- And then Elliot give him his last words, that he mentioned in the last chapter. "I'm sorry, Leo." *Wibbles* Aww!

-- When Leo asks Vincent what he wants from him, he says, "I want you to obtain the Will of the Abyss. And with that power, I want you to clear the world of my existence." Wow. I never saw that coming. That's why he's been working with the Baskervilles all this time? So he could find the vessel of Glen's soul, and ask this of him?

-- He suggests that Leo change the past, and make it so that he'd died as soon as he was born. That way, Gil would have had a much happier life. He wants to give Gil a past that doesn't include him. Wow. That's...surprisingly selfless and kind-hearted for Vincent. Granted, his methods are just as violent and crazy as he usually is, but still. I wouldn't have ever expected that he'd sacrifice his own life, just to give Gil a better life. I knew that he loved Gil, obviously, but I always thought it was in a creepy, possessive, sociopathic kind of way. Like, if anyone hurt Gil, he'd cheerfully torture and kill them and not feel the slightest bit bad about it. But I didn't expect that he loved him in a real, familial, selfless kind of way. Like he'd be willing to die for him. Wow. I...actually think a little better of Vincent, now. Not that I like him or anything, but I hate him a little less. He now has one redeeming feature.

-- When he tells Leo that he'll obey and protect him, if he'll grant that wish, Leo says that Vincent is just like him. "Your very existence made someone important to you suffer." I'd never made that connection before, but he's right. They are alike, in that way. They both have someone they love very much, and feel that their presence in that person's life has caused them great harm. (And, they're kinda right. Even if it's not necessarily their fault.) Even Vincent seems surprised at that comment.

-- It sounds like Leo might be agreeing to Vincent's proposal. He says that if Vincent's going to obey him, he wants him to cut his hair. He's tired of hiding behind it. So he does.

-- I'm a little confused about this next bit. Vincent comments on the pretty color of Leo's eyes. (Like Elliot did once.) He says, "That golden light shining in those two pits of darkness...reflects the world that only he can see. They really look like...The Abyss that could devour everything." Then he calls him "Leo Baskerville", and we see Leo without his hair covering his eyes. I'm unsure if he's likening Leo's eyes to Glen's, or maybe even Alice's. The zip file included a colored version of that page, and in it, Leo has purple eyes that look almost exactly like Alice's. Heck, with his hair and everything, he looks like he could be her brother. But, the dialogue doesn't explicitly say that his eyes are purple, so I'm wondering. Are they really, or did the person who colored the page just guess, or assume, or something? We know Leo's connected to Glen Baskerville, but is he connected to Alice, as well? Heck, we don't even really know how Alice is connected to Glen. She obviously was, somehow, because he kept her confined in that tower. We don't really know why, though...presumably something to do with her connection to the Will of the Abyss, though that's not been explained much, either. Argh, so many questions!

Wow. We learned a lot of things in this chapter! Of course, we were also left with some questions, there at the end. But still. It was a really good chapter. I can't wait for the next one! =D
