People are strange

Coming home I remembered an oddity we discovered the morning we left:

We were outside waiting for the cab driver to take us to the airport (he got lost -- yeah, a cab driver) and I was standing outside the fence at the corner of the yard, looked down, and noticed that the red rosebush was gone. Not dead -- GONE. I went into the yard and looked where it had been, and there was a snipped off stump where just a few days before had been a brave little shoot (which came back by itself from the roots after being heat-shocked last summer) with two enormous, beautiful, bright red roses on it.

A stump.

It looked as though someone walked into our yard (the fence is open on the driveway side, there's no gate), all the way to the corner, past several other rose bushes (at least one of which has blossoms), and instead of cutting just the two big red roses, took the entire bush. I really would not have minded them taking the roses. More would have grown. But not the entire bush. It's not too likely that bush will come back from the root a second time.

My throat started hurting yesterday in the Columbus airport. Now it really hurts and it's crawling up my head into my sinuses. I do NOT want a cold at Christmastime. I have WAY too much shit to do. We bought the tree and have it up, although not decorated yet, and I got most of the Christmas stuff out and up this afternoon. We'll see about doing some baking this weekend (New Year's cookies for anyone who gets cookies from us), and getting the Christmas turkey).

Cairo has been glued to me since I came home. (He's actually sitting in my lap now -- and for those who know Cairo, that's a big deal.) Nice to be missed.

The UPS site has made tracking a package much more difficult. Seriously. What. The. Fuck. This package was marked as shipped on 12/3 (just before I left), and there's no delivery information on their site, and I certainly don't have it here -- our pet sitter brought in all our mail faithfully and well -- so where the hell is it?

christmas, weird shit
