Many sign classes require students to go to deaf events to interact with deaf people. This could be a good idea if you are the kind of person who can walk into a room of strangers and strike up a conversation with someone. But if you're like me that is close to impossible. Now add the fact that you are conversing in a foreign language and the task of interacting becomes almost impossible. therefore I have always tried to fulfill these requirements by attending lectures and other activities that weren't purely social. Well tonight I went to the social evening at Starbucks in Camarillo. I didn't actually converse with any deaf, but for the first time I was able to successfully eavesdrop and understand portions of a conversation between deaf people. So it wasn't a complete success, I only conversed with a fellow student, but my understanding is good enough now that I could "overhear" a signed conversation.
