Subbing..

My first half week of subbing..

Wed: First day ever. Lowell elementary school, 4th grade, Mrs. B.
This class was awesome! They were really well behaved, the teacher had everything prepared and it was super easy to follow. I also had a nice hour break while they were in library, so that was fun. There were two kids on individual behavior plans, but they were really well behaved. One kid, C, was not. By the afternoon, he had lost both of his "raffle tickets" and was still running a muck, passing notes, refusing to work with his assigned partners.... so I had him go next door to the time out room. He wouldn't move. He just sat in his seat BAWLING!!! At first, I felt bad because that is the first kid that I've ever made cry... but then he never stopped. He just cried, and cried, and cried. Upon closer inspection, I realized that he was merely fake crying, and probably to avoid getting moved next door. I didn't budge. I told him he had two options - he could go next door and fill out the behavior slip, or he could skip that step and go straight to the principal. Eventually he moved out to the hallway. I guess I'm glad that I've experienced making a kid cry, becuase now I will know what to expect. hahaha Also, Shannon Rassmussen from Cascade was doing her student teaching in the room next door, so I got to eat lunch with someone I know! It's crazy how SCARY it is knowing you may have to eat lunch by yourself, even as an adult. hahaha

Ideas I want to steal from this teacher:
**Raffle tickets- each day, students start with two raffle tickets. They lose raffle tickets for not following instructions, or if they need to use the restroom during class (a BIG problem for 4th graders). When they lose both of their raffle tickets, they fill out a behavior sheet where they say what they were doing, and what they will do to make sure it doesn't happen again. At the end of the day, you write your name on your remaining raffle tickets, and the teacher draws 3 out and they win prizes (pencils, erasers, stickers, etc.) The kids REALLY seemed to like this.

**Emergency Sub File - In the back of her room, she had an entire crate full of ready-to-go activities, Time for Kids, and worksheets that a sub could grab and use at any moment. I only glanced through it at the beginning of the day and didn't need, but how comforting to know that it was there!

Things I want to remember to do:
**In lesson plans, be clear about WHERE you pick students up, and whether or not the teacher needs to stay with them for recess/library/PE etc. I just asked the teacher next door, but it would have been nice to know in the lesson plans.

Thurs: Cascade HS CHOIR-
I was awoken from my sleep at 6:15am with a call to work at Cascade at 7am. I took it! It was choir, and there was a student teacher who taught everything. It was the easiest job I think I will ever have. I felt bad because he was teaching everything, and I just sat there and listened... but thats what student teachers are for -- and I had the same thing when I was student teaching, so maybe it is like karma paying me back for all of those days where I was not getting paid to teach the sub was sitting in the back reading his book. hahaha I did help grade some of the music theory tests, so I felt like I contributed a little bit. I stopped by to see Hasstedt, and gave her my sub number... so maybe I will be returning to Cascade again! :)

Things I want to remember:
**Even if I don't have a job booked, I should probably wake up and attempt to look decent before 6am just in case.

Friday: View Ridge Elem... Mrs A 3rd grade

The morning was fanatastic. The kids all worked quietly on their writing and reading. There were even parent volunteers that came in to help with readers theatre groups, and in the afternoon one of the parents commented how she was impressed how well I managed this group of kids. :) The afternoon was a different story. I think the kids turn in to monsters after lunch. I think their parents must have packed them bottles of liquid sugar, and it didn't burn off during recess. They weren't out of control, but they were definately more hyper than before lunch. And, joy of all joys, Friday is art day. So picture me in a room with 26 sugar-hyped 3rd graders and and tempura paint project. NOT MY IDEA OF A GOOD TIME! hahaha I managed to survive the day without getting a drop of paint on me, but I did have to take paint priveledges away from one child who was flicking his paint brush around the room. I was exhausted at the end of the day.

Things I want to remember:
Always leave your behavior management plan with the sub! I had no idea what she used to keep the kids in line. I bribed their behavior by saying we could play heads up 7 up at the end of the day if they were good. hahaha. Obviously I still have A LOT to learn.
