Summary: He should have killed Hook when he had the chance.
Warnings: Spoilers up to 2x12.
Three times did Rumpelstilskin have the chance to finish off Killian Jones once and for all.
The first opportunity was back when he was just a coward and he took Milah from him and Bae; of course, the chance of him succeeding were less than zero, but nevertheless it was an encounter. And a failure.
He had his second shot before Regina casted her curse, but Milah decided to get in the way and... well, we all know how that went. Then again, he was mourning over her body and he left, leaving Hook shattered and emotionally destroyed, but breathing. Another failure.
The third chance was in Storybrooke, only this time he didn't hold back. He punched and hit and swung his cane against the other man with genuine rage; it was then when Belle stopped him. Belle, his sweet, innocent Belle. How could she not stop him, with his head filled with ideas about redemption and how bad revenge was, it was in her nature. And then, it felt like he was doing the right thing by sparing that man's life.
And now here he was, staring right at Belle, except she was not the same woman. Belle's eyes were now filled with fear as she sat on her hospital bed, trying to stay as far away from him as it was physically possible without leaving her bed, as Sheriff Swan and Dr. Whale had instructed her to.
Her words were hurtful, but she was cursed and didn't know what she was talking about, like the rest of the town did not too long ago. What was truly hurtful was her look. Those eyes, those beautiful eyes that brightened his days and warmed his nights by the mere memory of them, those same eyes that were currently staring at him scared, trembling, absolutel terrified f him.
She used to be the only one who claimed he wasn't a monster, yet now she stared at him like he was one. It was the single proof of his greatest mistake; he should've killed Hook in one of his three opportunities. And now he was paying the price for it.
