A single spell crossed the room, and in the blink of an eye Ron was on the floor.

"Oh wow, you totally defeated me" taunted Hermione as she walked towards him.

He was about to make a comeback, but he decided to save it for later. She was the one that was armed, after all.

It had all started earlier that day, when Snape was teaching them nonverbal defensive spells. Ron had managed to make a particularly terrible one, which made Neville's look brilliant by comparison, and not only did he have to put up with Snape's cruel remarks, but he was also ordered to practice the casting of nonverbal spells for next class, as he was going to cast a curse on him to see if he could deflect it correctly.

No one in the classroom thought he was kidding.

So, when classes were over, he pulled Harry aside and asked him for help. Unfortunately, he was busy with something Ron couldn't recall, so he had to throw his pride out the window and ask Hermione for help. Surprisingly, she accepted, and so here they were; practicing in one of the empty classrooms, silent-proof thanks to Ron's Muffliato Charm.

"Come on Hermione, this is stupid" he mumbled as she helped him up. "Let's just finish here and let Snape kill me in class and get it over with."

"He's not going to kill you, Ron" sighed Hermione. "And you're almost there. You just have to stop thinking about defeating me and start thinking about protecting yourself."

"Easy for you to say, you got it on the first try!"

"Because I practiced earlier" she completed. "You know, you can be very good when you set your mind on something and forget about being nervous, like in Quidditch!"

Ron's ears suddenly were red. The fact that Hermione just brought back the memory of his awesome performance last year, in the last Quidditch game, made him realize how hot the room was for some reason.

"Come on, let's try it again" she decided, positioning herself.

Ron groaned in response, but still prepared himself. He didn't get it right that time, or the next one, or the one after that. It took about half an hour before he could finally stop Hermione's spell successfully, and another half hour for him to dominate it completely. And Ron was happy, not only imagining Snape's frustration when he did the spell correctly, but also imagining Hermione's proud smile when he did.
