To protect and serve?

Just now, on the phone with the Burlington Police Department dispatcher, automatically re-directed there since the ONE Animal Control officer was not at her desk during her stated office hours:

Me: I'm trying to reach Animal Control, I have a raccoon wandering around in my backyard and driveway. Can you send someone to deal with it?

Dispatcher: What would you like us to do with it, ma'am?

Me: (surprised) Um... take it somewhere else? Are they supposed to be walking up to people in the daytime?

Dispatcher: Raccoons do occasionally come out during the day without having rabies, ma'am. Was it foaming at the mouth?

Me: I don't know, I was trying to get my three year old away from it.

Dispatcher: Call us if you see foam. (hangs up)

... are they allowed to hang up on people like that?! I certainly will call them when I see foam, so I can sue them for negligence. It's Tuesday morning! Not the busiest patrol day. And it's not like the dispatcher has to come out himself, he just sends someone else to look. The raccoon did eventually wander off. I think it's living under the shed next door. If I see him out during the day again, I will be INSISTING that they come relocate him, foaming or not. It's not really fair that Bella can't play in her yard because the police don't feel like working.

In other (good) news, our Bob Dylan tickets came today. The concert is July 1, and I'm really looking forward to it!
