OOC: Other Info

Background Info:
First off, Katelyn is a Druid. It's a form of magic not really classified in this game's system of Witches and Slayers, Seers and Mages, but I suppose that fits as it's not something you'd ever see in a formalized school. The traditions are probably just passed down orally from one generation to another by mentors. But really it's just a combination of some Slayer combat abilities and the nature spells that a Mage would know, so basically it's the same thing with just a different backstory. Like Rei's Shintoism and priestess abilities and such...the religious aspects of it just describe the same magical concepts in a different way. Or like Laurian's Paladin-ish abilities to invoke blessings, except with Nature instead of Holy magic.

Technically, she probably could be enrolled as either a Mage or a Slayer, because as a Druid she knows a little bit about both. But I don't really see her sitting around a classroom discussing complicated spell formulae. Slayer seems to fit her better, as she's tough from years of surviving harsh climates and has senses as sharp as an animals. Plus while she knows Nature spells, I wouldn't want her knowing any other magic, and the ones she does know she uses them primarily to fill in the gaps or to replace the modern technology that she's never had access to. She's pretty fond of the direct approach and is much more likely to use animal forms or her Druidstaff than anything else. She doesn't talk much about anything Druidic (secret society and all), so other than the obvious theme of her abilities she'd seem like any other agility-based Slayer.

Physically, Kate's attractive in a cute, girl-next-door kind of way. She's slender but still well proportioned, and very feminine. She's slightly shorter than average height, and her body is toned and firm but not muscular. She'll probably stand out as compared to the rest of her Slayer classmates. She has big, blue eyes and brown hair that she wears just past shoulder level. She's not very strong, though she has a lot of stamina and endurance. However, she is extremely fast, flexible, and agile, and makes great use of this in combat as a knife fighter. As far as her appearance goes, she always tries to keep herself clean and presentable, contrary to what someone might think about a "jungle girl". She doesn't have a very extensive wardrobe, but prefers loose, flowing clothes. She wants to be more ladylike, because that's how she remembers her mother, so when given a choice she prefers dresses and skirts, and light, pastel colors. Her favorite color, however, is blue.

She's got kind of a Jekyll-and-Hyde personality. Normally she's soft-spoken, kind, sweet, caring, and optimistic. She's very hard-working and a quick learner. Socially, she's a little shy around large groups but otherwise she doesn't get embarassed too easily. She knows English fluently from before her time in the wild, and has remembered a great deal of it. When she speaks though, she occasionally does mispronounce words giving her a funny accent at times. She's a little sensitive about that. Also, she's bad about making up her own words when she doesn't know the right thing to say, though that doesn't really bother her as much. (In truth, she probably has more difficulty than I'll be typing, and using a computer would also be a bit much for her, but I'm going to assume that she's been back Stateside long enough to learn some of those basics. Also, I'll gradually start making her talk more and more normal as time goes along.) On the downside, she can sometimes be rude as she doesn't "get" subtlety or white lies. Modesty and tact also are a bit foriegn to her, as she often naively says whatever's on her mind. She's somewhat timid and unsure of herself, though that does not keep her from trying. And often failing. When she feels threatened, she might lash out in defense. For example, she might instinctively call for roots to spring up and trip the person that she considers a "threat" whether they really are or not. When she's really in combat, she becomes more fierce, more aggressive. She's not mean-spirited in the slightest, but adrenaline takes over and she'll do whatever it takes to survive. Basically, the harder things get for her, the tougher she'll get to compensate. Especially so when she takes animal form.

As far as relationships go? She's about as innocent as possible reguarding them, having no experience or real knowledge on the subject. But mating is a natural part of life, and she'd have a pretty casual attitude towards relationships in general. I don't want her to be the school slut, but on the other hand, she wouldn't exactly be prudish, either. ^_^;

Magically, she knows a ton of Nature spells, and can do virtually anything when it comes to plants or animals, but little else. Her primary trick is being able to take the form of animals, insects, or magical beasts. Normally she fully assumes the beast form, but she does have the ability to just grow gills or wings or claws if need be, though these partial forms for the most part do not feel comfortable to her. She can stay in animal form indefinitely, but larger, more powerful forms tend to exhaust her if maintained for any extended period of time. She has learned how to still speak while assuming most animal forms, and often prefers to spend time shapeshifted than in her natural state depending on what mood she's in. The change is physical in nature and does not affect her mind, though she has the bad habit of becoming more aggressive and more vicious when she takes some of these other forms. It's almost as if she acts the part of the animal she assumes. Her other most notable magical trait is an aura that most animals find peaceful. Humans (non-Seers, at least) can't detect it because it's not really a spell, but pets love her, and wild animals won't run away from her and may even approach her. Even predators would be hesitant to attack her, unless she was doing something to provoke them. Strange and exotic magical beasts, however, are unaffected. I doubt it'd really come into play in the RP, other than Snow White-ish background scenes where birds land on her fingertips or what have you. She can't speak with the animals, but shares a kind of empathy with them.

In combat, her tactics vary depending on the situation. She can take animal form, but she is unable to cast spells until she reverts back to her original shape. She owns a pair of magical daggers, the only treasure left from her father's discovery and one of the very few worldly possessions she has. The Daggers of Sun and Moon are a matched pair of knives, both enchanted to return to the wielder if thrown. She would likely be using these in her Swordfighting classes if permitted. (If not, she could switch to a short sword for her training.) This fits her well, as she is quick enough to deliver a flurry of blows while dodging or parrying the enemy's attacks. She also frequently uses a spell that temporarily turns any twig or branch into a Druidstaff, which is virtually indestructable and enchanted such that even a girl of her small stature can deliver powerful blows. Her fighting style is unorthodox, to say the least, and her seemingly random style may help or may hinder her.

She literally owns next to nothing, save for the pair of daggers that she looted from the remains of her father's equipment. In the wild they helped her immensely, as the Sun dagger has a minor fire spell on it, and the Moon dagger has a similar ice spell...basically the blades either get really hot or really cold when removed from their sheath. She used these all the time for things like boiling drinking water and cooking meals and what have you. Other than that, and one or two minor things like a canteen or other remnants of camping gear, she owns one dress and her school and gym uniforms from the boarding school she went to before St. Catherines. She has no money, and likely doesn't understand what it's used for (though she grasps the concept of barter in general). Everything she owns she carries around in a simple sack. This doesn't bother her much, as in her mind she has everything that she needs for survival, and her life is far easier and more luxurious than it ever was in the rainforest. She has little desire to hoard possessions like most people, and would much rather lie in the grass and watch a butterfly for hours on end than play video games or go shopping or whatever "normal" people do.

She's taking quite a few classes this semester. That's so she doesn't have quite as much spare time, since she doesn't have hobbies and doesn't know what to do when left to her own devices. Between so many magical classes and an equal number of mundane ones, she'll be distracted for much of the time. She was sent to St. Cat's mainly to learn the boring, mundane stuff, since she already knows the magical side of things so well by comparison. St. Cat's was chosen for her promarily because the faculty there know how to handle magic-users, and the students are used to abnormal classmates. The main thing she'll need to learn about spells are the basics - safety, when to use them and when not to go flashing your power around, and things like that.

And here's her schedule for the semester:

Potions
She has some experience with that, mixing crude healing potions from herbs and roots.

The Study of Magical Beasts
This one'll be her specialty, obviously.

Swordfighting
Required...she'll have trouble with heavy swords, but would do well with daggers or staves. If she has to switch to short swords, she'll still do a little above average but not amazingly well.

Archery
Again, required. She'll have no clue at all about this one.

Magical Safety
Required. Probably the most important class for her, so she can learn to control her powers and not do anythign really stupid with them.

Art
She knows people see her as crude, and she wants to take art because it's interesting, and because maybe it'll help her to be more "civilized".

Women's Studies
She hardly knows what it means to be human, much less a woman. This is another one she's looking forward to.

Health and Sex Education
I forgot about this one being mandantory and the other not. *shrugs* Might make more sense for Kate, anyways, since she doesn't equate sex and love. Mating is a normal, physical part of nature, and taking the "sex" side without the "romance" side would only reinforce her existing ideas and casual nature rreguarding things like that. ^_^;
