A Visit to Room 112

Apr 04, 2006 11:07

Having spent a good bit of time alone in the gardens, softly crying to herself, Katelyn eventually curled up and went to sleep in those natural surroundings. She awoke to the new dawn, and made her way about all of her classes as she normally did. After the last class of the day, she stopped by the library to use the computer, not having one of her ( Read more... )

Katelyn walked in behind her pink-haired classmate, slightly startled by how warm and friendly she was being. Outside of school, she had only met Utena twice before - once while she was in a coma, and again later in the gardens when she quietly spoke of her illness. Katelyn smiled, happy to have a chance to see the "real" prince now that she had fully healed and was away from their Slayer classes.

Smoothing the pleated skirt behind her, she took a seat on the floor near where her hostess had been just a moment ago. "Yes, I will...help with eating this candy," Katelyn said in response. She peered into the basket with childlike curiosity, fumbling around with many different types of candies, seemingly more interested in the bright and shiny wrappers than actually opening any of them to taste the sweets inside. "There are, so many different kinds. What is good?"

While waiting for a response, she accepted her drink with a polite thanks. Setting the bottle down, she began untucking her uniform blouse. A hand slid to her lower back, and from a hidden sheath she pulled out one of her twin daggers without saying a word.

With her running record of poking her head in at the wrong moments, Minako arrived right on cue, at about the same time Artemis popped up from underneath the top bunk's covers. "Candy!" was what they both blurted out in unison, causing a bothered exchange of glances.

"And," um, "Katie, I think? I'm The Roommate." At first, Minako didn't take any notice of the blade in their guest's hands. "You weren't hiding that, were you, Utena-kun~? Haven't seen you this happy in a while." She said it suspiciously, before looking down again at the dagger. "Wh-what the nani are you doing? You don't need to kill the bottle." Frantically, her finger pointed at the weapon as she walked in, wondering if she'd need to take it away, but thinking better of trying. "I can understand wanting to, but don't do it in here. Were you raised in the jungle or something?"

Katelyn smiled and nodded at Minako's arrival, though she said nothing. She had been simply waiting for Utena's roommate to finish speaking before politely introducing herself, but her head turned around sharply upon hearing the blonde joking about her upbringing. Looking over her shoulder, she stared up at the taller girl with fierce, piercing eyes. Not making a sound, she brought the blade of her knife to the edge of the bottle with a clink. Slowly rubbing the flat side of the blade against it's surface, the scraping of glass and metal was her only response.

Utena looked up in surprise. She had known that Kate was armed when she entered the room - most Slayers carried some form of weapon, even if that weapon was merely the knowledge of how to use one's hands or body effectively in a fight. Her senses had indicated no danger, so she had barely even noticed that Kate had drawn the blade at all.

What had surprised her, however, was Minako's seeming hostility towards her guest. Her eyes darkened and she spoke directly and firmly to her roommate. "That was mean, Minako."

"Utena. If I saw you using the Sword of Buenos Dias or whatever to open up a soda bottle in our room, I'd say the same thing." Shutting the door with a long push from her back, Minako decided not to have an audience, should this become a less than flattering moment. "Besides, for all I know, next thing someone sitting around like that does, is try to skin and eat Artemis. All we had to do was go to 'civilized' China for that. Right, Artemis?" After a brief pause, her foot took to nudging the small basket. "Artemis."

"Huh, oh," the white cat dug his head out of the candy stash. "Don't remind me of that." Artemis let out a sigh, turning to Katelyn. "They caged me, and wanted to cook me, and who knows what else. I don't think we really need to worry about that from Katelyn, though." Stepping back a bit before sitting down, he smiled nervously, "Right?"

Minako stepped back in immediately, "Right. It's just, an expression, anyway. Like..." Waiting for a while, Artemis coughed into his paw, "Don't hurt yourself trying to get another one right today." The blonde glared down at him and his pride, simply allowing silence to refill the room.

clink. schhhhhcht.

Katelyn sat there for a moment, continuing to brush the flat side of her blade against the glass container. She listened to the new girl and the talking cat as they spoke to one another, thinking of what to say in response. After a moment, she added "I do not need to hunt, right now." She glanced briefly at Artemis and the basket of snacks before looking back up at Minako. "We have, plenty of food at the moment."

clink. schhhhhcht.

She looked down at the unopened bottle in her hands as her facial features became less harsh. "I am...sorry. Perhaps I am not being 'civilized' after all." Stretching, she held the frosted glass bottle up for Minako. "Would you, like one as well? It should be very cold now..."

Utena took pity on Minako, who - for once - seemed unable to think of something to say. "Oh, you cooled it off!" She smiled at Kate, scooting closer with a Slayer's weapon-lust gleaming in her eyes. "The dagger did that? May I see it?"

Minako fluttered her eyes a bit at the offer, picking up the bottle by the top with minimal fingers. Peering at it, she was somewhere between being impressed and wondering if it was somehow dangerous to drink after Katelyn was done with it. "Oh, I get it . . . thanks." Opening the bottle up, she didn't think much of apologizing, her mind skipping directly over the unpleasant prospect.

The blonde's attention switched to her roommate, and the basket Artemis was already sniffing at again. "You didn't actually answer my question." Regardless, Minako invited herself to bend down and go rummaging through the candies, though not in an entirely untidy or impolite manner. "Maybe she didn't want you to get fat again." The unwelcome quip from Artemis was met with a point that touched between his eyes, seeing as he was rather near to begin with. "Those were cursed, be quiet." That wouldn't have stopped him very well, but Artemis had simply already said everything he wanted to.

Katelyn looked down at the dagger, now the only object that she held in her hands. It was an ancient knife, well taken care of despite it's age. The blade itself was very sharp, a dull grey with the slightest hint of a blue tinge. The hilt was a deep, dark royal blue with a moonstone set in the pommel. She smiled and nodded at her friend's request, trusting her not to use the weapon against her. The worst she would likely do would be to accidentally freeze her own drink solid with the unfamiliar magic, and in any case, it's fiery twin was nearby should it be needed.

After handing the dagger to Utena, she turned to look at the talking cat once more. Finding that more ironic than she probably should, she could not help but address him. "You are called Artemis, yes? How...how do you speak? That is, not natural for cats to talk..."

Artemis would much rather have been using his mouth to eat candy than talk at the moment, but he figured getting between Minako and the basket could be hazardous to his health, so answering the question wasn't too much trouble.

"I'm, ah, not from around here." Ambiguously enough, Artemis simply glanced to the ceiling with an upward motion, though he meant to indicate much higher. "The people of Mau normally stay in feline form, and we serve as guardians, and treasurers, and ambassadors, and scouts, and . . . I'm stuck keeping track of Mina here." Coughing into his hand again, he gave the closest thing he had to a smile. "Let's just say I work with special cases." His next pause was only long enough to make sure Minako didn't like his initial wording one bit. "Children born to mundane parents, but that have magic powers and need to be discovered, things like that." Emerald eyes looked down over his white body. "It's easier like this, most of the time."

"Most of the time...", Katelyn repeated to herself. "So, you are not really a cat. Artemis, person of Mau, just finds it easier." She nodded in understanding, finding that explanation more than adequate. "I understand. I am not a cat, either."

Looking up, she saw Utena examining one of her paired daggers and Minako searching through foil-wrapped chocolates and other brightly-colored candies. Curiously peering into the basket herself, Katelyn looked at each of the different kinds, wondering what each variation tasted like before picking a random one based on how shiny it's wrapper was.
