Kate was not a girl to be bound by schedules and routines. She only barely managed to make it to all her classes on time - not for laziness, but for the free spirit that told her to eat when hungry, sleep when tired, play when bored and do as your feelings urge you to do without being governed by calendar or clock.
But she knew that this was strange and unusual in the world she now found herself in. Humans were creatures of habit, often eating at the same times, bathing at the same times, and depending on routines to keep them focused throughout the day. And though she did not feel the same way, she in time had figured out when she could reach her friends and when they usually seemed to be busy.
It was at one of these times Kate went up to the room of her best friend, knowing that her surrogate sister wouldn't really be around. The normally strong girl clutched a book close to her chest, holding it as close as a child might hold a teddy bear or security blanket. She seemed vulnerable as she knocked on that familiar door. "Um, hello?" Her voice sounded uncharacteristically weak. "Is...anyone there?"
