The Curse of the Bridesmaid's Dress

Jul 01, 2011 16:02

So, some of you may know that my sister is getting married next Saturday. I'm her maid (matron, technically, but that sounds so old) of honor. Now, everyone knows that bridesmaid's dresses are notoriously ill-fitting and are generally a pain in the rear end. (I mean, I tried really hard to find one that my bridesmaids would like, but I'm pretty sure they hated them just the same.) Katie picked out this pretty purple dress, which looks fabulous on her (tall and skinny) but not so fabulous on me. For one thing, I have horrible shoulders, and loose straps just won't stay up. So anyway, the dress was too big up top, so I took it in to have it altered. (By the way, it has this terrible side-zipper. This is important later on.) The first seamstress took it in, but she didn't speak any English at all, so when I decided that the straps needed to be shortened, I took it to someone who I could communicate with. The straps were shortened, but now the dreaded side-zipper would not shut all the way. I tried. Many tears (and blood, where the zipper pinched me) were shed, but to no avail. That zipper was not going up. (I'm rather full in the chest area, and side-zippers have always been the bane of my existence.) So I had to rush back to the tailor's, who is now letting out what the first seamstress took in. Hopefully, after all this work, I'll actually have a dress that fits. (Of note, the dress cost $70. I've now spent $107 on alterations.)

I should have just worn it too big. Perhaps the wedding guests would have enjoyed the wardrobe malfunction.
