fun facts

Did you know that the Billboard charts were not invented until 1944? Fascinating stuff, right, but how am I supposed to find out what songs were popular at the beginning of World War II?

This comes up as part of an insane trajectory of research I've been doing in my free time lately. Turns out WWII is actually interesting--who knew? For example, there was this woman named Nancy Wake who worked for England and the Free French during the German occupation and is one of the biggest badasses I've ever heard of. Killing an enemy soldier with her bare hands is least of her accomplishments.

Seriously, her Wiki page is one of the most fascinating things I've come across this year. I highly recommend it. (And seriously, where was this chick for Women's History Month throughout my school career? Way to fail, feminists.)

Also, completely not related to the 1940s or World Wars.... I watched the third Twilight movie over at Rachael's place last night, and have to say... 1) I think the writing on number 3 is somehow worse than the previous two installments--even if the editing and art direction and (dare I say it?) acting is vastly improved. and 2) I am getting real sick of the general frequency of self-harm as a method for female characters (especially young female characters) to "feel" their emotions in various media. (Black Swan, I'm looking in your direction, too.) I'll maybe write a big feminist sploogey post about it one of these days, but I need to get my thoughts in order first. For now:

Dear Hollywood,
Stop fucking doing that. Teenage girls have enough issues being teenage girls without you encouraging them to do stupid things like cutting and committing suicide. Please knock it off.
Love,
M-dog
