Wooden Horses chapter three
Quality: Briefly checked
Characters: Mal, Simon, Kaylee, Jayne
Mal looked round at the room. To the casual eye, it looked normal, as far as he could guess. But it was quiet. People sat in ones and twos and threes, murmuring to each other, their eyes flickering -- not to each other's faces, but to to the table, to their sides where their guns might be, and to the newcomers. Could've been normal behaviour for the place, could've been that there'd been trouble earlier. But it gave Mal an uneasy feeling anyway. "I think we should leave."
"Already? But -- "
"I know we don't really know what to expect from this place, but this don't feel right."
"You think it's a trap?"
"Could be. Best thing to do is leave again."
"And that won't look at all suspicious."
Mal glanced at Simon. There was an intensity to his eyes, a certain jut to his jaw -- trouble, that spelled. "I don't have time to argue with you, doc. We gotta go."
"We won't be able to come back, if we go like this. What if River's here?"
"Would you rather get shot?"
Kaylee bit her lip. "Simon, the captain's -- "
"The captain wants me to abandon my sister, if she's here," Simon said, evenly. "And that's okay with you, Kaylee?"
Jayne glared at Simon, stepped closer. "That's uncalled for."
"Can we have this conversation back on board Serenity?"
"You don't even know this is a trap!"
