Since I became a fan, I have loved the dynamic between these two, and I wish it had been explored more in the TV canon. The tone in Screamer's voice when he says of Skyfire, as he's being unfrozen, "I circled half the globe searching for him, but he was gone" has made me tear up every time I watch it... it hints at a time that you put in text here: a time when Screamer and Skyfire were the closest of friends.
As for whether Starscream's in character here - "in character" goes out the window for him, I think, where Skyfire is involved. It's canonical for Starscream to have some sentimentality and be rather emotionally erratic when Skyfire's around - just watch "Fire in the Sky." =) So yes, I think Screamer is in his "Skyfire-character" here.
I do love the whole thing between the two of them... it was actually the A who inadvertantly ended up chosing the pairing... I couldn't think of who to write it about, so I asked him to pick a letter... he picked S... and Skyfire... and it was just obvious to pair him with Starscream! I'm so glad you liked it.
Poor Starscream (at least in this respect). I like how you used the empty box--the gift of friendship that Starscream can't give anymore--but I'm a little puzzled as to why the wrapping paper was a clue. Was it in Starscream's colors? Had he written something on it? Or are we not meant to know? =)
And I agree with newsy891 on this--Starscream acts very OOC even in that episode! From the moment he starts recounting the story of their friendship, he slips back into someone else, someone he was before. So his OOCness is actually in character, hee hee! =)
That's kinda what I was hoping... OOC for Starscream, but not where Skyfire is concerned....
And the wrapping paper... well, I guess it could either be in his colors, or have little jet planes over it... something that reminds Skyfire uniquely of Starscream... I'm not entirely sure what it was... Skyfire subspaced it before I could get a proper look at it :) I think it's one of those things that's best left to the imagination of the reader.
I hadn't seen this before. I really like what you did with the challenge! :D And I agree with the others, Starscream just -is- someone else when Skyfire is in the picture. And for what we were shown of that 'other person' he was definitely IC. Good job!
