As much as I find insurance companies a necessary evil, I must give kudos to Progressive for making things very easy so far starting with the email sent a day or two after the storm explaining what to do in case of hail damage. Last Monday I made a claim online and set up an appt for 10am this morning with their local estimater, all without talking to a single person. I took half a day off, showing up half and hour early at Huber Automotive Body Shop just off 114th & Dodge where numerous signs helpfully pointed the way to the white tent where they were expecting me. In my own warped mind I kept thinking of "Porky in Wackyland" and that thought made me smile.
While my car was being examined, I was offered a chair in the shade under another white tent with the lure of soda and Krispy Kremes nearby though I didn't partake. A half hour of reading Sedaris later, they called my name. My car apparently has more damage than I thought with hundreds of nickel sized dents and dozens of quarter sized ones. Much of the work can be done with paintless repair though the entire hood will need to be replaced. Then the gal handed me a check on the spot for $3314.99 to get it fixed - or not, my choice. I was absolutely not expecting that and was pleasantly shocked.
Of course I will get the car repaired even with a $500 deductible because I don't really feel like the check is my money, unless you count the $800 I give them annually just for this sort of event. Plus it makes me sick every time I see those dents because a) if it hadn't been for the Summer Arts Festival, my favorite event of the whole year, I wouldn't have got caught in that weather and b) I know I don't have anything to prove a year and a half on but I've tried so hard to take such good care of that car. This is the first new vehicle that we, and now I solo, have ever had - it's 3 years old and only has 25K on it. With the amount of driving I do, especially now with gas prices, I plan to have it until I die. My little Honda has served me well thus far and now I need to do right by it.
I guess my next step is to get some advice, do some research and make some appointments. While Greg is supportive, he's really not very helpful with this sort of thing which means that I'm becoming (become?) the single, independent woman I've always wanted to be. I think. My Grandpa in France said in a recent email "Your Mom showed us some pictures that she had taken. I thought that you looked more mature somehow in your pictures - that 'little girl' look was gone - there was more self assurance somehow." I am the Lizard Queen, I can do anything.
My little problems are relatively minor when the devastation to trees and property in Dundee and around town is still so very apparent despite people and city employees working around the clock to get things cleaned up and back to normal. Have not written about babysitting, cat duty, mom being in France, etc. but hope to one of these days.
