super fat tuesday

The branch library a block away has closed for renovations until the fall. While it’ll be a lot nicer when it reopens, that’s not helping me out now. Greg didn’t understand my disappointment until I compared the time frame to when he’ll see his next football game. Now he gets it.

Speaking of football, we hosted our first Super Bowl party together attended by his parents, his brother Steve, wife Anne, oldest nephew David, and brother Jason. In the worst timing possible, he got called into work right before kickoff leaving me to host his family in his house. But it was all good and he was back by the second quarter. The Green Bay Giants won.

Backtracking even further, Shannon organized a girls night out Saturday to see some 70s/80s cover band she likes at Amerisports Bar. After missing her birthday party at the same place I felt obligated to go and was actually semi-looking forward to it by the end of the week, especially when Melissa said she’d go and offered to drive. I knew it was a bad sign when we arrived to a huge crowd with no place to sit. Shannon and her posse got there about 15 minutes later with the bad news that due to some ultimate fighting on the screen, the band wouldn’t take the stage until at least 11pm, leaving us to hang out in the casino until then. Aside from a root canal or a rectal exam, there’s no place I’d rather be less. The band was pretty good in a covers band sort of way but Melissa and I left around 11:45, four or five songs into their set, about the time we were planning to leave anyway had they been able to start on time. I think Shannon was disappointed. Melissa dropped me off at Greg’s where I let myself in with my key. He was already curled up in bed half asleep. Honey, I’m back. Okay, I love you. That's where I most like to be.

Yesterday I was in a rush to get my taxes done, hoping for a small refund or at least expecting to break even. Instead much to my dismay I discovered that I owe the feds a rather hefty sum (794 doll hairs to be exact). My downfall was not changing my W-4 to reflect my newly single status not realizing that singletons are screwed if not literally then figuratively in this country. U.S. out of my pants! I will deal with it but it’s a setback and my checks will now be even smaller. Good thing I bought those shoes when I did because there is no new wardrobe on the horizon for me in the near future. On the bright side, my state refund is enough to buy a nice meal at Subway ...

Last night Eric and I had dinner at Rick’s Café Boatyard, the first time I’ve been there. It was sort of a last blast since he just accepted another job that won’t bring him to Omaha nearly as often. The Hawaiian shrimp pizza was delicious though I did resist the temptation of Death by Chocolate afterwards. Eric told the waiter that it was the first time in 19 years he’s seen me not order a dessert. It’s hard to believe we’ve known each other that long.

Raise your hand - who’s sick of winter? We got enough snow today to be a nuisance but probably not enough to cancel work tomorrow. Greg picked me up in his jeep and I spent the majority of the evening at his house doing what I would have done had I been alone here - reading - since he and another guy were otherwise occupied upgrading his security system (from analog to digital?).

February 3rd marked the one year anniversary that I officially moved. And it’s finally starting to look like I actually live here.

weekend, shannon, weather, greg
