Our long weekend in Chicago is finally here! Well, almost. We leave bright and early tomorrow morning, arriving at Midway around 10am. To the best of my knowledge, tentative plans are as follows: Greg's friend Rich will pick us up and we'll lunch somewhere prior to the afternoon Cubs game. Then off to Naperville where they live for some Chicago-style pizza in the evening.
Next day, hang out in Naperville, either downtown or the zoo - someplace they can easily take their three kids. Later the adults go out for dinner, sans children.
Sunday we head back downtown where hopefully, weather pending, we'll get to do the one thing I want to do most - the architectural boat tour. We'd love to visit the Art Institute and some other things but there probably won't be time (that's the price you pay for staying with friends in the burbs).
That night we stay at the Courtyard Magnificent Mile at the friends and family rate courtesy of John Marr. After enjoying a leisurely morning and free continental breakfast, we'll head back to Omaha early that afternoon.
Hoping that all goes well, especially since it's our first trip together and Greg's first time traveling with anyone ever. Also, I've never met these people before. We've got another trip planned for Rochester, NY to visit his sisters the week of Thanksgiving. Tonight we're getting Chinese takeout to eat while watching the premier of Survivor China, making cab arrangements and getting to sleeps early. My packing is done (mostly) and I hope I chose wisely. Chicago folks, how's the weather out there?
Today is the college's annual Convocation and it'll be the first time in 7 years I haven't gone. The new administration isn't as gung-ho about mandatory attendance so we opted to keep the library open instead. I volunteered to stay behind to man it which means I'm relaxing with my thoughts here instead of in a pew at Trinity Cathedral. It'll be nice to have a couple days off as work has been a little blah lately. Yesterday another long time employee (one of the few left) asked me how my two kids were. Huh? In a small group committee meeting, a faculty member asked who I was and what department I was in. I know I want to change my clothes, my hair and my face but I haven't done so yet … Also, when emailed that I had a question regarding benefits, our new HR director, aka "The Tool", referred me to someone over at the Med Center without even finding out what my question was. I think I figured out the answer on my own but he wouldn't know that because he never bothered to follow up. How I miss Barb!
Anyway, Chicago here I come. Wish me luck. Amy has my itinerary and flight information so someone on the planet other than you lot knows where I am.
