Today has been a fairly productive day despite Bruce still being down for the count. Not really in want or in need of much music-wise right now, I wasn't expecting a lot at the Record Show but still, like the Farmer's Market, I always feel compelled to go. You know, just in case. This time I was in luck, quickly stumbling onto
Regan's Records. With the likes of Gram Parsons, Flying Burrito Brothers, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris in his offerings, this guy seemed to specialize in the alt-country genre. Greg would have gone ape shit had he been able to make it. The guy next to me was lamenting the fact his wife only let him bring $50 and wanted him to look for Christmas music. I circumvented that by withdrawing $$ from my "secret" savings account. This is as good a place as any to mention the guy wandering around looking for someone who might be interested in acquiring a KISS pinball machine. Nope, I don't really feel like a fish out of water in this crowd.
My own alt-country playlist (currently consisting of some 600 songs) which has been receiving a lot of airtime lately will soon be beefed up with:
- Golden Smog ~ On Golden Smog
- Golden Smog ~ Down by the Old Mainstream ("Pecan Pie!")
- Golden Smog ~ Another Fine Day
Anything Jeff Tweedy touches is gold (although he doesn't appear on the first and very little on the last so I'll reserve judgment).
Also purchased the Old 97's Alive & Wired double-CD set as a Christmas present for a friend and will resist the urge to open it until then. I'm assuming we'll still be friends then and I'm assuming he'll share but then again, I assume a lot of things and you know what they say about that.
Just when I think I'm done collecting Bowie, more can be found. Almost out of habit, I was sucked into getting the 30th anniversary 2-CD edition of Aladdin Sane put out by EMI that's shaped like a little book and a 1987 Rolling Stone cover story that I don't think I have (but for $5.00 took the chance).
Afterwards mom considerately took me to the very excellent Chinese resto so I wouldn't have to be around her asthma-inducing cats and truthfully, I don't think I would have eaten much more than a piece of pumpkin bread if she hadn't. We popped on over to Goodwill after that so I could dump off two boxes of stuff (in the mood to divest myself of excess possessions once again) but I couldn't resist a beautiful hatbox for $2.99 and some toddler-sized clothing for Megan because, like me, she already shivers from the cold and winter hasn't even hit yet. Pictures surely to follow as soon as I have some.
