Maureen's Story [excerpt]
During our mercifully brief relationship, I compiled about fourteen thousand reasons why I should never have gone on a date with this man in the first place (pushing thirty and still living with parents; still sleeping with a stuffed sheep; still thinks he's going to be a blues guitarist when he grows up; can't possibly get a real job because of possible interference with loftier career goals). One does well not to date patrons in general (mainly, because coworkers take an unhealthy interest in all lurid facets of the relationship, which does not come in so handy in later years when the same people are now one's employees who take smug pleasure in reminding one of a not-so-dignified courtship).
Since then, I've made it a point of making sure the men I date aren't registered library users. It just makes everything a whole lot simpler.
