Walt Whitman's niece

According to latest reports, Lily has been released from the hospital and will continue treatments on an outpatient basis so that's good news. If she's feeling okay enough, I may visit them at home on Saturday.

Last night I attended Naked Words, a new poetry event hosted by prairiesong on the last Wednesday of every month at The Reading Grounds. Good to see her as well as the Masons who I've now dubbed "The Lemurs". The back-story is funny, especially if you know my mom. Matt and Sarah sent us a very cute picture of the toddler Sophia wearing a stuffed toy lemur around her neck on which they had captioned "Sophia: Queen of the Lemurs". Upon showing it to my mom she wanted to know, "Who are The Lemurs? And what kind of a last name is that?". So very Seinfeld.

I like how Matt and Sarah's poetry is often about each other and their family life since marrying and having Sophia within the past three years or so. It's obvious to anyone that they were meant to be together. Several months back (when Mike McGee, aka johnnyappledog, was last in town?) I once made the observation (note: NOT criticism) to Bruce that a lot of poets we know write about that connection they have with their significant other or conversely about the ideal love they would like to have in their life and how he writes about neither. At this point he sarcastically called me "June" as in June Miller, wife of Henry. Sharp words and tears ensued and as a result, I've not discussed poetry with him as much since. His loss.

Top 5 signs that spring is finally here:
  1. Rain and its related gear: boots, jackets, umbrellas ...
  2. Big pile of dark earth at the end of Minne Lusa Blvd ready for flower planting
  3. Road construction and lots of it
  4. It's warmer outside than in.
  5. It's light in the morning, at least until DST kicks in this weekend
