Stress of the Medical Variety

A couple of weeks from last Thursday, m'Lady wife was at work at the bookstore when she noticed that her eyesight was worse than it was a moment ago. She thought that perhaps the contact has fallen out of one of her eyes. She asked a coworker if her contact was still in; to which they replied that yes, it was still in her eye, and in its proper place, too. m'Lady shrugged it off, seeing as we were going to the eye doctor the following day to get her new perscription.

The next day, while waiting for m'Lady to get her eyes checked, I hung out with the tenagers in the lobby and we had a fun time just talking and joking. A pretty long while passes. When I see m'Lady, I think it's time to go, but she shakes her head no and pulls me out of the lobby. She has realized that she can't see out of her left eye. We spend some more time there while the docs thoroughly check out her eye. They conclude that the eye is healthy, so it would be in our best interests to get her to the DGH eye clinic. Haha, it's Friday! No Eye Clinic For You!

After a weekend of visions of nerve damage and brain tumors, Monday finally rolls around, and m'Lady calls DGH and they give her a different number to call since she doesn't have insurance. By the time she getrs through on this secondary number, all of the uninsured spots have been picked up, and they want us to call them next Monday. My mother-in-law hears that and says FTS. She comes dontown, picks up her daughter, and they go to the waiting area in the hopes that someone drops out of their appointment. Ka is with us, they get in.

They diagnosis is Optic Neuritis, and inflammation of the optic nerve which causes signal to be lost along it. They get m'Lady on a steroid treatment for it. It may take up to six months for her to regain use of the eye, but that's decent news. However, they tell us that 30% of the people who manifest this condition also have MS.

Shit.

So she has to go to neurology to start a battery of tests to determine if she has MS or not. Also, we need to apply for financial aid. Well, we don't qualify because we make more than $23,000 a year. However, since we are the working poor, we get about 30% off the bills. *sigh* While waiting around we met a couple of cool dudes, brothers, and we talked about comics and movies with them.

And that's really about it for now. m'Lady goes in for her MRI on the fifth, and they tell us what's what on the fifteenth. They say that these tests are not the kind one can rush, but it is a pain in the ass to be waiting.

Things do look hopeful since m'Lady is not exhibiting other symptoms of MS.

So that's a bit of joyful stress in the life.

As promised, there is more to come.
