this thing from ages ago? I actually got started on them!

4: Rikku
12: Paine
“This was a bad idea.”
Rikku smiles and nudges Paine’s foot under the table playfully. “I don’t know about that.”
Paine is scowling down at her dinner, as if it had been the pasta and not Rikku that had dragged her here. “Everyone is staring at us. I told you we shouldn’t have come.”
“We’re celebrities, Dr. P., of course they’re staring. Probably they all want autographs.”
Paine rolls her eyes. “I think they’re probably wondering why you’re holding my hand over the table.”
“Maybe it’s a combination.” Rikku traces a finger over the back of Paine’s hand. “Does it bother you that much?”
Paine glances around. “The staring is usually for Yuna. Nobody looks at the sidekicks.”
Rikku is pretty sure Paine knows that’s not what she was asking, but she lets it go, taking her hand back to pick up her drink. “Well, I kinda figured when you said yes that you knew we’d be in public. Dates usually are.”
Paine shifts uncomfortably in her seat. “I know.”
Rikku is glad she’s in sandals: she slides her toes up Paine’s calf. Paine jumps and glares at Rikku as if suspecting a trick. Rikku just smiles, not bothering to feign innocence.
“You’re impossible,” Paine grumbles, sipping her drink, and Rikku can feel her leg muscles tightening at each teasing stroke.
“I’m glad you wore a dress,” Rikku says in response, still wearing the same sultry smile that makes it clear she doesn’t give a damn who’s looking. Paine squirms, but this time she gives an answering (if uncertain) smile - a very, very small one.
This time, when Rikku takes her hand, she doesn’t seem to care much about the stares anymore.
