So
hadespuppy spent the past week in New York being tourists. Now I'm in Winnipeg for a couple of days (Karaoke tonight, people? I will be phoning you all as the day progress to bother you more about this.), then back to Vancouver Saturday where I get to freak out about not being nearly prepared enough for moving next week.
New York was cool, if overly grey and claustrophobic for my liking. Our week progressed as such:
- Wednesday, April 25 = traveling. Every piece of technology I own decided it hated me, and my flight was at 7 am. Argh.
- Thursday we wandered around Times Square, but only after first getting lost by turning left when we should have turned right. Our hotel was on 48th between 8th Ave and Broadway. Had we turned right at 48th and Broadway we would have been in Times Square. Instead, we turned left, walked ten blocks up Broadway until we hit Central Park, then walked 15 blocks back down 8th before we realized we were idiots.
That night we went and saw Rent. Collins was completely adorable. The actor played the character more on the shy/bashful side, and he and the guy playing Angel had amazing chemistry. Most of the rest of the cast was good, but I didn't really like the guy who played Roger.
- Friday we went to the Met, which was huge, and my brain stopped processing about halfway into the four hours we spent there, but there was a exhibit on Barcelona and Modernity: Gaudi to Dali, which I loved because I love Barcelona and Gaudi and Dali. Then we went to FAO Swartz, where we ate soup and ice cream for lunch/dinner, and I bought a Time Turner, and
hadespuppy bought a letter opener modeled after one of the swords from LOTR and a Design-Your-Own Hot Wheels car. Then we went to the Guggenheim, which kind of bored me because, except for surrealism, I'm not big on modern art and because I was about to collapse from exhaustion.
- Saturday morning we went to the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market, where I found a 60th birthday present for my mom. Then we went to Central Park Zoo where were were forced to overhear way to many parents tell their kids erronious things about the animals, like how amazing the "seals" were during the sea lion show, right after the announcer had explained the difference.
Then we headed down to the world's largest Build-A-Bear Workshop, which is actually not nearly as impressive as you'd expect, where I made a Patrick snow leopard! He sings "he tastes like you only sweeter"! Now, I know you're thinking, "Snow leopard??" but it works, and he's adorable, and part of the proceeds go to the World Wildlife Fund, and when it comes to stuffed animals, I've never been much of a fan of bears anyhow. Actually, I originally went in there planning to make an Andy Hurley rabbit, but then I saw this grey pinstriped suit that just screamed Patrick, so I had to make him, it was fate. Unfortunately, they had a really crappy selection of hats, so he's currently wearing a red baseball hat, but I figure if anyone can pull off a red baseball hat with a pinstriped suit, it's Patrick Stump.
Then we went into Saks Fifth Ave and Rockefeller Center but I really wasn't in the mood and just wanted to collapse. After collapsing at the hotel for the evening we went to the midnight screening of the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Chelsea Cinema.
- Sunday we slept in, then went to the American Museum of Natural History. We only got to see about a quatre of it (+ a planetarium show narrated by Robert Redford) before the museum closed and they kicked us out. The mammal halls kind of creeped me out a bit because it was kinda like going to a zoo where all the animals have been taxidermied. In the evening we went to a comedy show at the Laugh Factory. 3/5 of the comedians were pretty good. There was a two drink minimum and they put a lot of alcohol in the drinks (I assume so that the comedians seem funnier than they really are), so we were reasonably drunk by the time it was over.
- Monday we went to the Museum of Sex. the two temporary exhibits were Kink and a history of Pornographic films, so it was fun even if I didn't learn anything new. Then we wandered around Chelsea for the rest of the afternoon. The Tribeca Film festival is on right now, so we went to the premiere of a documentary about Alexis Arquette (MtF transgender actor, sibling of David, Patricia, etc. Arquette) which was really interesting. She says some really important things about how gender identity is not primarily about genitalia, and how whether or not she (or any transperson) has had genial surgery isn't anyone else's business unless they want to fuck her.
- Tuesday we went to the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty. Or I went to the Statue of Liberty. See, the ferry to the Statue of Liberty has better security than most airports.
hadespuppy carries a pocket knife in her purse. Either they could take it and she'd never see it again, or they could escort her off the property. So she threw her camera at me and told me to take pictures for her. The security at Empire State Building wouldn't let her take the knife in either, but they at least were rational and put it away so we could come back and get it when we were done.
Then we took the subway out to Queens to find a Hot Topic. I got a The Academy Is... t-shirt, a Fall Out Boy hoodie and a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles tank top. I just managed to resist a MCR hat, on the basis that I don't really wear hats and couldn't justify spending $20 US on it. Then we headed back to Broadway to see Avenue Q, which was brilliant.
