I've always led myself to believe that the word, when turned on its side, is intended to resemble the item. The sharp capital 'A' is the pin, the 's' is the gentle folds of the crevat; the 'c' is the Roman numeral for one-hundred, which denotes thread count, the 'o' is the button of your waistcoat, and the 't' represents the amount of "titulation" your fashion inspires.
I find the thread count and titulation are positively correlated; thus, when purchased a three-hundred thread count example, I was indeed wearing an "ascccottt".
[Samuel arrives on the deck, wearing his most extravagant waist-coat and derby hat, which Alice may notice is decorated with his heron feather. He has a bouquet of daisies he picked from the field wrapped in butcher's paper he took from the buffet.]
...Ah! I have arrived!
[Samuel takes her hand in his and raises it to his face.]
[Samuel's face slackens. He thought he was as sharp as ever! Maybe she isn't a fan of Italian cuts. Oh well- it won't get him down.]
They are only dangerous in that they represent the incredible danger I am in of here-forwith losing to you the deed to my heart, which you have promptly notarized and brought to public auction at Old Chimberton's auctionerium. Por vous!
[He offers her the flowers with both hands, as one would offer a sword, which for some reason she happens to have...]
Well m'lady, where shall we start? Is there a proper menagerie in this fun faire?
[She realizes he means to give her the flowers and laughs, taking them. She puts one in the brim of his hat, another behind his ear. They match now. How exciting this shall be.
She loops her arm in his and opens the doors to Carnival, the haunting howling screams of the place washing over them.]
I like the carousel best. Sometimes the bears come and if you hit them right, they become bats! Do you mean it, really? I can have your heart?
No. It belongs to the ship. I will take good care of your heart. I will put it in a box and keep it there.
[She takes his hand and dances down the ramp to carnival, as the howling swells and goes abruptly silent. Look! Horses. On hooks. Their eyes roll to show the whites and they thrash weakly.
She stops by the carousel and sets his hat back on his head.]
[Samuel takes a slowly step towards the bear. His lip twitches. This thing is a bear.
he turns to see Alice- smiling, playful, torturing a horse. He can't let her down.
Samuel swallows his fear and rolls up his sleeves. He takes off his hat, make to put it on the floor, but then decides the better of it and puts it on Alice's horse. Turning back to the bear, he clears his throat.]
Now see here... Bear. I'm afraid it is fisticuffs for the two of us.
[Alice giggles, as the carousel swings round. She can't see them any more, but by the time her horse circles around again, she's not on it.
She runs lightly down the tent that covers the carousel, leaps off it. She lands somewhat behind the bear and turns gracefully, katana drawn. It flashes silver in the light and blood follows it.
The bear's head hits the ground with a wet smack before exploding into bats. Alice laughs as they attack, harassing her and Samuel.]

Of course!
[She's waiting outside Carnival, wearing a pink cocktail dress with a loose skirt and a katana.]

You should have brought something sharper. Are daisies dangerous? Sometimes I think they are. I fought with a pillow once. I won.
[She seems perplexed by his weapon choice.]

[He blushes as she brings herself closer to him.]
My, this place is aurally colorful. I'd say that howling is a bit of a saffron- certainly merry, if not a bit unctuous. Is this carnival Rom-run?

Will you help me up?

[Samuel swallows. he shakily reaches to her waist, making sure not to touch her sword or, god forbid, pull her skirt up any higher.]

Oh my. That appears to be a grizzly. I feel i should tell you: I did not plan to lie prone and soil myself on this outing. Have you any other ideas?

You could fight it! Bears are fun.
[She likes Carnival. She kicks the side of the horse and tries to hurry it on. It moans.]

Alice? How does one fight a swarm? I wouldn't usually ask a pretty lady anything of the sort, but considering that you just slayed a bear...
[Samuel hides his shame behind the bats. How can he impress her, now that she killed the bear?]
