i step across the threshold, out of the comfort of the car.
my toes meet the dust ground
and my nose inhails the musky scent of what to come.
you step out on your side.
your eyes watch mine as you come around to me.
i can see in your face that were ready for the climb.
you can feel in my body that i am too.
so we take our first step.
before us we see the steep winding path to the top.
so inviting and intoxicating, surrounded by the canopy of trees.
i was greeting with slightly nervous excitement.
it was going to be an incredible climb.
but we are finally ready.
we reach for each other, then begin our ascent.
it was hard at first, we both shook with the exertion.
it hurt, the burn of my muscles increased with each rhymic step we took.
but then we were met by a different set of sensations.
through the pain i could see the beauty of the trees, the flowers.
the damp, slightly untamed smell of the untouched forest.
i paid close atention to what my body was doing.
i followed your lead and focussed on climbing, climbing.
our breath was coming in short bursts now.
labored by our hike.
we can feel the warmth of the sun through the trees.
as we work toward our destination the air fills with the dampness of our sweat.
but then as we neared the peak, we slipped into unison.
everything else was forgotten, for what we were about to see.
the excruciation was mack with more force as we made our last push to the top.
four more steps...
just keep going, keep breathing, almost there.
three more steps...
push harder now, so close.
two more steps...
so so close, just a little more.
one more step...
then we burst through the trees.
we are met by a view unimaginally beautiful.
all at once we are filled with the escasy of our journey together.
exhausted, we sit back and look over the distance we've cumm.
