Random Drabble

Okay, this one was sooo random...  Ben and I were talking about how it'd be nice to have a garden when we have our house (as in, when we own a house, like when he's not in the military anymore).  Somehow that led to the conversation about chickens.  *blinks* Okay, bear with me here...

I mentioned how Madi's family has a fairly good sized garden and they live pretty much within the city.  They also have chickens, since they're apparently on the border of what is considered 'city limits' or something.  You'd have to ask Madi for the specifics.  Ben was kind of impressed about the chickens, to which I said would kind of be a cool idea.  Talk about a useful pet.  Of course, Madi's family always has TONS of eggs, but they have somewhere in between 4 and 6 of the little buggers (I'm not sure exactly how many, they never stopped moving long enough for me to count properly).

So I said it'd be kinda nice to have chickens, Ben agreed, and then I told him we'd have to get some of the funny-looking ones.  Oh, and you all know what I mean...  If not, this picture says all: http://thelansfords.com/photos/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=32385&g2_serialNumber=2

...

Yeah. *grin, giggle*

Anyway, so after we talked about the different kinds of chickens, I had a brain flash and this is the result...

=^.^=

It really was a beautiful sunset.  One would expect no less of this time of year, the edge of summer turning into fall where it was cool enough in the evenings to wear long sleeves but still nice enough to sit outside.  Jen curled her hands around her steaming mug of cider in an effort to keep her fingers warm while she and Caren lounged outside on the back deck.  The sliding glass door opened as Madi slipped outside to join the pair with her cup of freshly brewed tea.  The guys were inside, duking it out in Ben's current favorite game (what it was, Jen couldn't remember for sure, but it had explosions and blood and Ben loved it).

"Nice night," Madi murmured as she lowered herself into the last available lounger.

"Mm-hmm..." Caren hummed, not taking her eyes off the incredible sunset.

There was a pause.  It was a very comfortable silence, one that was simply enjoyed by the three women for what it was; a pure moment of relaxation that needed neither words nor unnecessary actions to mar the perfection of it's existence.

As the three sat there, a sudden ruckus was heard from one side of the house.  At break-neck speed from said side of house came running two very panicked looking chickens, their ridiculous head-feathers bobbing franticly as they ran.  Swiftly on their feathered behinds was the house-hold cat who looked partially determined and partially panicked, with her fur standing on end.  A scant few feet behind her was the dog.  Tongue lolling out of the side of his mouth, exuberantly goofy smile on his face, he ran determinedly after the cat to persuade her to 'play'.  And, on the heels of it all, came a very grubby, giggly 8 year old with hands outstretched in an effort to catch it's play mate.

The group disappeared around the other side of the house, where subsequent squawks, yeowls, barks, and gleeful shouts were enough to deafen some.  It went quiet soon enough, though, as silence decended on the backyard once again.

"Definitely a nice night, don't you think Jen?" Caren asked dryly.

"Apparently..."

*grins* I can SEE this happening...  And, if you were wondering, I deliberately left out the sex of the kid, seeing as how we have no clue what the baby is going to be.
