I saw the movie, and felt such an immediate, unyielding need to discuss it that I joined this group just so I could talk about it.
Oh, wait, that doesn't make sense. Isn't that why everyone else joined this group? :-P
So, where to start? First, thing I noticed... umm, the entire first verse of Now or Never was MIA. Where'd it go? For that matter, a lot of the songs seemed to be edited. Right Here, Right Now was missing the second verse, Walk Away was missing a verse as well, IIRC, it's hard to recall specifics for now.
Right, well, onto the actual movie... I love that they opened up with a shot of Zefron's head. They know their audience. :-P That shot was greeted IMMEDIATELY with loud cheers in my theatre. As was, of course, the short scene of Troy pulling off his shirt before changing into his basketball jersey to sing 'Scream.' I also had a few Lucas Grabeel fans in my theatre, I believe, as they clapped, and cheered, loudly, pretty much any time he did something good. His cheers were not nearly as loud as Zac's, but they were still there!
Anyways, onwards... I love that Ryan, even though Sharpay tried repeatedly to recruit him, never actually helped her with her nefarious scheme in this movie. Hooray for character development! I'm a gushing Ryan fan, and I have to say that during "I Want It All," he totally checks out a nearly-shirtless Zeke. Several times in fact. The loudest cheer from the Lucas fans of the night came when he won one of the Juilliard scholarships. I was one of them. :-P
Now, we break down the individual musical numbers...
Now or Never - Apart from the missing verse, this was pretty cool. Not much choreography to speak of, but the cheerleaders were great and the song was a nice way to start the movie. Also, LOL at Ryan as the school mascot. XD
Right Here, Right Now - Eh, Troyella. >_> I know they are the central couple and everything, but I've always been a fan of characters at the periphery moreso than those standing in the spotlight. Still, it wasn't bad. WTF @ the missing second verse, though?
I Want It All - This song is the ANTHEM of my LIFE. It was amazing and over-the-top and full of Ashley Tisdale and Lucas Grabeel. What's not to like? The fantasy sequences were awesome and I loved the numerous cast cameos at various points in their fantasies. Awesome sauce.
I Can Has Danse? - Eh, Troyella. >_> At least this song's missing second verse actually shows up later in the movie. XD
A Night to Remember - Just... great. Probably the most well-written song of the movie, with great choreography to boot. The whole HSM cast struts their stuff. Loved the scene with the 'mothers' and 'fathers' of the boys' prom dates.
I Just Wanna Be With You - Yay, Ryan! Yay, Kelsi! They are separate because Ryan is gay as a daisy and they are NOT a couple! Eh, Troyella. This is probably the best Troyella song in the movie, actually, or at least it is when we hear the full version in the Spring Musical.
Boys Are Back - HIGHLIGHT OF THE MOVIE. The choreography here was just unreal. Zefron and Corbin danced their asses off, and the results are spectacular. Loved the tire surfing, and the samurai swords, and the 'car chase.' Fortunately, not nearly as gay as "I Don't Dance." I say fortunately because Chyan is my OTP. >_>;;
Walk Away - Eh, Gabriella. As far as Gabi songs go (every movie has to have at least one!) it's not bad. Also worth noting that the group of Lucas fans were sort of giggling during this song. I don't think they liked it. :-P
Scream - Whoa, Troy. I was not expecting this. Zefron rocked this song. And he rocked it in a tank top, which is always a plus. (b^_^)b
Spring Musical Medley - Oleysa Rulin's singing voice really isn't that great, but she's really only featured on the first song, so it's not bad. Loved the Wildcat Dance during NoN's reprise. I guess Chad learned quite a few moves from Ryan over the summer. He sure as hell dances NOW! :-P I Want it All reprise truthfully didn't feature Lucas's voice at its best, but it was still good. JWBWY was hilarious. I actually kind of liked Jimmy's character, but when he burst on stage with that outrageous costume and chased Sharpay away, I loved him. Then the Troyella started, and it wasn't bad. This version of the song is better than the first one. I loved the whole 'let's all hug Gabi' scene, even if I don't particularly like Gabi as a character, it was a nice way to spotlight all the other Wildcats. Finally, ANTR Reprise... well, it was good for a few laughs. I wasn't particularly enamored with the Sharpay / Tiara storyline, but it wasn't bad.
High School Musical - YES YES YES. This was fantastic. The gradu-dancin', the roller coaster, the Sharpay crowd-surfing... the whole thing was like riding on a mile-high wave of pure joy. Then the main cast walked away from the crowd and went through that curtain, and I was just like "OMG." The freeze frame thing brought the loudest cheer of the night from the entire crowd. Then... they kept going for a bit with strange close-ups of each of the principle actors. Errr, as some sort of goodbye, perhaps? Whatever. Zac's face again got the loudest cheer. Come on... he's not THAT good looking.
Okay, fine, he is.
All in all, I had a great time. Also, it's important to note that until this point, I had not seen even a single High School Musical movie. I started with the songs (which I found insanely catchy), and just sort of learned through osmosis. As a movie... eh. But as a musical, it was a blast-and-a-half. I want my life to be like a High School Musical. XP
I'd love to hear everyone's else's thoughts, highlights, interesting experiences, encounters with strange people at the theatre... we HSM fans are a diverse and somewhat strange bunch, to say the least. :-P
