So, I bring you my first world problems: I need a new computer. The one I have is ancient (in tech life) - somewhere close to 10 years old. Opening iTunes brings the CPU to 100% capacity. Ancient, I tell you

It's hard to make recommendations for other people, cause people's needs are different. That said, I'll try.
I have a Kindle Fire, which is effectively a tablet, and my dad has an iPad. I think tablets are awesome! It's a very fun toy. But... it (and iPads and other tablets) is limited. Basically, they run apps, like a smartphone. I would definitely recommend you get a proper desktop, especially since you already have a mobile computer and a smartphone. If you could afford both an inexpensive desktop and small tablet, I'd say go for it, but if you can't afford both, I'd recommend getting a desktop. The Walmart here has a nice eMachine for $300-$400. You might also consider getting a passport (external memory) for photo storage - those photos tend to suck up loads of memory.
I love my iPod, but it's an old iPod classic, not a fancy new iPod touch. My nephew has an iPod touch and LOVES it. It's basically a palm size tablet. I can't say much re: an iPhone. My dad (who has also has an iPad) has an iPhone, and he must like it as he keeps replacing his old iPhones with new ones, but I have a dumbphone (and no interest in getting a smartphone.) Again, it's basically a palm sized iPad, so either would be a good test as to whether an tablet would suffice.
For me, I use my desktop for lots of different things that require proper programs, ie. Photoshop, Word, etc., that don't run on tablets. I also use it a television. When I moved a couple years ago, I didn't bother getting cable tv (I do have cable internet). I do all my tv/DVD watching on the internet. So those are things I had to take into consideration. I was also simpler to have the internet connected to the desktop and wifi it out from there to other devices, but again, I don't have a smartphone. In short, those were my needs and they may not be at all relevant to you, so there ya go. My two cents worth of advice. ;)
Great advice. Thanks! I knew tablets were limited. I was hoping for a laptop/tablet combo, but I'm a little ahead of the curve. Microsoft just came out with one (Surface Pro) but the battery life is almost non-existent. Maybe one day. :)
A passport for storage... good idea. I'll look into that.
I've got a huge TV (50" plasma) along with a DVR and cable so that's not something I need from my computer, etc. The exception to that is the ability to download a movie and watch it later (like on a plane) or to watch Hulu or something when I'm out and about - waiting rooms, lunch breaks, etc. Hence the tablet.

Butting in to say that hubby suggests take a look at the Asus Transformer:

Still thinks you should get a PC though for the HD space if nothing else!
