Spirit Molecule and Protomen at Lucky's

So last night, Tony half dragged me to a show. I was tired from working all day and wasn't really in the mood, but I never go out anymore so I figured I should go. Plus, he recorded and mixed their album, and I was in school+studio with the cellist. The show was at an unusual venue- Lucky's- in Greenville. This is usually a normal club where all the run of the mill college students go, and they have girls dance on the bar Coyote Ugly style. I guess they're starting to have shows at weird places because all the places that normally have metal, rock and funk shows keep getting closed down by the city. I was expecting a half empty club, filled with sorostitutes wondering why metal bands were playing at "their" club. But no. I was so wrong.

I walked into a familiar scene from the last show I went to in Greenville, which was held at a local indoor skate park. People I knew, and was actually friends with! and new people that I could actually carry on an interesting conversation with! how delightful! It really made me realize that I don't have to hate this town as much as I do because there are still some really cool people here that still do awesome things and listen to awesome music.

Tony had to go over and help the sound guy with the settings for Randy's cello. I'm sure it helps that he plays an electric live and not his concert cello.
I was actually really impressed with their music. I've only heard random 15 to 20 second loops of it and never a complete run through of any song. Its experimental metal, and Randy often moves back and forth between a rhythm guitar/bass role to the role of a lead singer. He often plays melodic solos. They are all badass musicians and what they come up with as a group is very intricate and entertaining. Due to Randy's classical music background, lots of their music is greatly influenced by classical music and the most original metal composer- Dimitri Shostakovich (Russia, 1940's)

Unfortunately it'll be a while till their album is available. They've recently (like between the time the album was done and this show) have added a bass player. Everyone kept asking whether Tony was going to go back and add him. uhh- considering every track has already been mixed- no. Its their own fault for deciding to add the bass player late in the game. I think they're going to have this guy Jamie King master the album for them.

I supposed I should mention the band that played after Spirit Molecule, Protomen. Its one of my friends favorite bands. They play concept music that is supposed to embody the metamorphosis of Megaman transforming into Megaman. We didn't stay very long into their set, but it sounded decent. Like a soundtrack more than songs although they did have a lead singer.
