I'm equally puzzled by the Trump vote among the general masses (as opposed to the dedicated Republicans, who had nowhere else to go). Everything I've read purporting seriously to explain this has consisted of explanations of how frustrated and helpless rural whites and others feel. Sure, I get that - Obamacrat declarations of how well the economy is doing mean nothing to individuals who are actually being beaten down by it - but I cannot figure out how on earth these voters thought Trump would be a solution to their problems.
Either they believed his wild boasts, in which case they're giant rubes who would fall for any sleazy pitch on late-night television, or else they knew he was full of hot air and voted for him anyway on the anarchistic nihilist grounds that blowing everything up couldn't be worse than the status quo - and of course it could and is rapidly becoming so.
Or, as often suggested, they're just resentful that racial and religious and sexual minorities are getting the same benefits that they themselves crave, in which case they're the racists and bigots they get so terribly offended to be called when evidence suggests they are.
