Not exactly Italian

You know, when I tell people I'm a fourth sicilian, they're like, oh cool, I love Italy. But to be quite honest, anyone who really knows sicily knows its alot different than Italy. It might as well be its own country. The Bronx is to New York as Sicily is to Italy. Plus, most sicilians aren't exactly "caucasian" either, unlike mainland italians. ( Read more... )

Ancient Italy is like a mixing of a bunch of ancient groups. The underlying culture and ethnicity is from a neolithic migration from North Africa spurred by the growth of the Saharra desert following the last ice age with the main routes over sea between Tunis and Sicily or over Gibralter. African does not mean dark skinned especially in the sense of North African people and Africa being the most genetically diverse continent.

Unfortunately for most people, Watson, people automatically assume sicillians are one thing or another. And to be quite honest, mainland italians are for the most part caucasian from the influx of northern europeans immigrating there during the last century. So at this juncture, most people who have heard of sicillians being part african do assume the darker skinned variety. I apologize for not being more clear on what I meant.

No it's cool, just been talking about cultural migrations in Italy in my Roman History course and how Italy is different because there aren't burn layers were a new culture superseded an older one but instead form the pottery and stuff they made hybrid cultures. Of course modern Italians are more caucasian due to Germanic invasions which marked the end of the Western Empire.

How is the history department there anyway? I'm going into archaeological anthropology and was thinking about UK, but their anthropology building...kinda looks like a crematorium.
