A day in Calicut

Jun 17, 2008 09:29

I had to go to Calicut for a day due to some personal reasons. I started off on Friday @ 10 pm. I had to take K.R.M.S volvo bus as there was no other option left. I got the last Aisle seat. 30 mins into the journey the guy next to me started snoring very loud. I kept elbowing him often but the snoring only increased. I tried in vain to sleep but ended up no where near.

To make matter worse for all the passengers (better for me) we had to change buses in Gundulpet @ 3 am. The reason we were given was the bus had a flat tyre. But the truth was the bus had no permit to enter into Kerala and hence we had to board a bus which had a permit for Kerala. This happens everyday I was told by some passengers.

That change made things slightly better for me. The seat behind my seat was right on the engine and was like a bed. I had no option than to take the back seat what with the person snoring again!!!

I noticed there was a slight crack in the last seat window. I went to sleep and got up after a couple of hours when the bus was negotiating the hair pin bends after Wayanad. That crack was soon spreading and I was bit worried if it will eventually give up. Luckily for me it held on till I reached Calicut.

There are lot of hair pin bends after Wayanad. Some of them real danger ones. The bus driver had to reverse on a couple of occasions to pass through safely. On one such hair pin bends one guy who was ascending refused to budge to give space to our bus which was not able to negotiate the turn leading to a traffic pile up on both the sides.

The bus driver had to eventually reverse and leave space for the oncoming traffic.

The descend wrt to scenery was excellent. Early morning rains and light made the scenery more beautiful.

But the scenery was spoilt by huge boards housing some fancy ads with bright red colors. There was plenty of such boards. I wish the concerned authorities should pull down all such boardings.

I reached Calicut at around 7 am. I was impressed by this city. Although close to a modern day city every house had ample space in front and the sides where there was many plants and trees grown. I did not see a single house minus the greenery.

The return journey was worse. The bus in which I was traveling hit a pedestrian who probably was drunk. But that impact made the cleaner who was seated next to the door to smash through the front wind shield. They took both the pedestrian and the cleaner to the hospital. Since the windshield was broken there was no way that we could continue in that bus. All the passengers were packed off in different buses. I was lucky to put in the sleeper bus. The overall delay was more than 2 hours.

I was glad to be back in Bangalore in a single piece...:-)

All the photo were taken with my mobile from the bus...hence the poor quality.
