Q: How important is it that I monitor what I drink? Is sticking to diet soda enough?

A: Believe it or not, drinking can make or break a diet. Because we get thirsty often throughout the day, it's hard to monitor what we're drinking, and we can end up taking in hundreds of calories - without even quenching our thirst!
The first thing you want to consider when choosing a drink is the nutritional value. You'll get the most nutrition from 100 percent juices, low-fat milk, and smoothies. Bear in mind, though, that these come with calories, so they should be consumed in moderation.

Sodas, soft drinks, sports drinks, and juice drinks can really slow down your dieting. They're chock-full of calories and sugar that you just don't need. Diet drinks might seem to be a better alternative, but artificial sweeteners should also be consumed in moderation.

Water is the tried-and-true best option - it's the easiest to get hold of and the best at quenching thirst, and it leaves you feeling fresh, hydrated, and clean. While you're weaning yourself off sugary drinks, try getting yourself hooked on water. Ice-cold water after a workout - there's nothing better! Having water with your dinner when you're eating out is not only cheaper (complete with free refills) but also a good start to getting into the habit. Get yourself a water bottle to keep handy for refills at the office. The more accessible water is, the more you'll grow accustomed to having it as your drink of choice. Trust me, you will notice a difference!
