Summary: The truth is, although the reality of it said otherwise, without the McQuaid brothers, it felt lonely.

Something always felt like it was missing, after they finished a case where they were the McQuaid brothers. Because, really, what were they without screaming at each other in the hallways, ratty, too-tight clothes, and excuses that made little to no sense for everything and anything? The truth is, although the reality of it said otherwise, without the McQuaid brothers, it felt lonely. Quiet, even in places that the McQuaid brothers never would end up at. Sometimes Doug wished he had been born a McQuaid brother, rather than a Penhall. Maybe things would be much more enjoyable. The only thing that would ever bother him would be the idea that being with Tom the way he was with him in real life would be incest. This would bother him immensely; and Doug couldn't imagine, under any circumstances, what would be on his mind if he suddenly decided to not be interested in Tom that way. So Hanson and Penhall were, in that sense, better than the McQuaid brothers. It didn't change whether or not he missed them though.

So Doug would find himself staring at Tom, and it was completely involuntary - but, well, there were no 'but's. He knew that Tom noticed that he stared; Tom had confronted him about it a long time ago, after the third or fourth time they'd used the McQuaid cover. Tom had laughed when Doug had explained, shook his head a little, and walked away. This had all been before they'd been an item; it was strange to think that time had ever existed, because so much of his life involved Tom. It always had, but this was just - well, he worked with Tom, he lived with Tom, he slept with Tom, he even went to school with Tom!

Not that he was complaining.

"Parker! Doug Parker!"

Doug Parker had been so intent in his task of staring at Tom while he walked down the hallway, that he'd barely noticed it was Tom talking to him.

"Hm?" Doug managed, trying to snap out of whatever world he'd just been in.

"Meet me in the teachers bathroom over by the music room at lunch," Tom whispered into Doug's ear while he slipped past him.

Doug smiled to himself as Tom walked away. This was better than anything; even the McQuaid brothers.
