May I Cut In? (2)

After twenty minutes of the Fish talking about proper conduct and the responsibilities of being young adults, Madame Morrible began room assignments. "And now for the girls who will be in the Pink Dormitory," she was saying, as Galinda gazed off across the entry. Her emerald eyes scanned the crowd. She had a knack for classifying people; where these girls were roomed would confirm their status here at Shiz.

She watched as the girls gripped their bags and were directed to the fourth floor, where the Pink Dormitory was located. There were other room assignments, but Galinda hardly paid attention. The Gillikinese girl would not be wasting her time on these under-class young women. Rather her eyes wandered, scouting possible competition. As far as she could see, the three girls beside her would be the biggest competition, and they didn't even really pose a threat. Soon all of the boys were be at her beck and call, while the girls enviously looked on. So far, beside the hideous Headmistress, Shiz University was looking very good.

Her head snapped up as Morrible began pairing off girls. Now these were girls more in her league, those who paid for double rooms. Of course, she would have a single room, for her parents would have nothing less for their little princess. That fact curled up the corner of Galinda's lips in a smirk.

Pair by pair, the occupants of the room emptied slowly as each couple was given their room assignment. Emeralds with emeralds, rubies with rubies, but these girls would pale in comparison to the diamond that was Galinda.

After what seemed to be an eternity, Madame Morrible neared the end of her list. Pfannee and Shenshen had just been paired off, and Galinda knew she was the only one left to be roomed.

"Hmm," Morrible hummed, her eyes looking over the sheet she held between her pudgy hands. "Miss Galinda Arduenna?"

The little blonde girl approached the Headmistress, though she had to physically restrain herself from wrinkling her nose in disgust at the appearance of the woman before her. "Right here," she said, waving her hand gently.

Madame Morrible shifted her spectacles further down her nose and examined the girl. Galinda frowned as she noticed the smirk on the woman's lips. Normally the girl from Gillikin didn't mind the attention of people's eyes on her, but the way the Headmistress was looking her over made her skin crawl. Swallowing hard, Galinda stood tall, determined not to let her dislike or fear of the woman show.

"Yes, hmm....Miss Arduenna, there seems to be a slight development regarding room assignments," she said, seeming to smirk even more as she peered down at her list once again. Galinda's light brows furrowed together with a look of slight confusion.

"What do you mean?" she asked, not liking the amused twinge in the Fish's voice.

And it was that moment that Galinda's confused angelic voice floated through the hall that Elphaba saw her. Blonde curls, curving figure, short skirt, pale skin...perfection. It made the green girl sick to her stomach. The hall was nearly completely clear now, only a few girls lingering, who seemed to be in the same grouping as this Galinda. Elphaba knew they were the only two yet to be given room assignments, and she felt her heart fall into her stomach. Surely her great grandfather had arranged something better then a room with a girl such as Galinda.

"It seems we have an extra girl," Elphaba heard Madame Morrible say. She could swear that the Headmistress was amused at whatever the situation happened to be. Hesitantly she approached, knowing the situation involved her.

"What do you mean an extra girl?" the blonde was demanding.

"An extra girl, another young woman without a room assignment. All of our departments are full...except your private double room."

"Are you saying..."

"Meet Miss Elphaba Thropp,"

"What?"

Galinda turned and was met with the sight of Elphaba just paces away from her. Her eyes widened and Elphaba was sure she was going to scream. But instead, she swooned. For a moment, no one moved as Galinda swayed. In an achingly long second, Elphaba glanced up and saw that Morrible wasn't going to attempt to catch the girl. Without thinking, for if she had she surely would have let the girl fall, Elphaba reached forward and grabbed the girl's arm.

Her soft, pale skin under her green fingers made her skin burn. She tugged just enough to keep Galinda from loosing her balance, before the Gillikinese girl shrieked. Slapping the offending green hand away, the girl stumbled back, before catching her balance, which was quite a feat in her heels.

"I will not stand for this!" Galinda cried, her voice half an octave higher as she turned toward Morrible. The three society girls, Shenshen, Pfannee and Milla, were at her side suddenly. They were consoling the girl and glaring at Elphaba, who stood awkwardly, watching.

Galinda's eyes drifted to the girl who was supposed to be her roommate and she blanched. Why in Oz was her skin green? It made her sick to her stomach. And dressed in a sad excuse for a frock. Looking away, scowling at the Headmistress, she tried not to take in the hideous form of the green-skinned girl.

"I have to agree Madame Morrible," Elphaba's voice rang out and the girls turned to look at her. It was the first thing she had said and Galinda shivered at the sound of her voice. "My grandfather..."

"Oh, I know all about your great-grandfather!" Morrible cried, her glare piercing into the Thropp girl. "I assure you, he made no specific directions for your rooming. Had you registered within the allotted period, maybe you would not be in this predicament."

Elphaba began to protest, but the looks she was receiving from Galinda, her friends, and Morrible silenced her. She looked at them, feeling more hate from this group then she had so far (and that was quite a feat considering her color and upbringing).

"My parents paid..."

"We have regulations here, Miss Galinda. You and Miss Elphaba will be rooming together," Morrible interrupted. "Room 22, second floor," she announced as she dropped the key into Galinda's hand; the metal slipped between the blonde’s delicate fingers and clanged against the marble floor. She looked as though she might swoon again.

The Fish spun on her heels, her terrible clothes, which resembled fashion from some fifty years ago, trailing along the floor. "Madame Morrible!" Galinda cried, breaking loose from the gentle hold her friends had on her as if  to follow the Headmistress.

"This is outrageous! Wait until my parents hear about this! Madame Morrible will be sorry..."

The rest of angry word were lost on Elphaba as she followed a ways behind the blonde and the other girls. She glared at the floor, hating the situation. In her mind, she couldn't help cursing Peerless for not arranging some sort of other arrangement for her. On this early morning, her first day at Shiz was turning out to be much worse then she couldn't have possibly expected.

Milla was kindly opening the door to Room 22 as Pfannee and Shenshen listened to what Galinda had to say about the horrors of her roommate. "She's green!" Elphaba heard, Galinda’s voice sounding choked.

Just as she reached the door, which had remained open for Galinda and the girls to enter, Shenshen slammed it shut. Elphaba clenched her teeth, trying to keep from getting angry at the idiotic girls. With a deep breath, she opened the door and entered. Galinda and the girls had retreated to the private bathroom attached to the dorm, leaving Elphaba alone to look at the dorm.

She frowned. It seemed that Galinda's parents had the room customized early for their daughter. There was a single bed, outfitted in the fluffiest, pinkest comforter Elphaba had ever laid eyes on, and a multitude of pillows. The one large window had pink drapes...the desk to the left of the door was white, trimmed in pink...a huge bookshelf was near the bed, but rather than books, it was filled with shoes. The green girl thought she might lose consciousness.

Walking over to the fire place that was placed against the far side of the room, she was relieved to find the chair before it was a lovely red, rather than pink. There she set her messenger bag and her one suitcase. She could only assume that Morrible would have a second bed sent up for her. Just as she debated leaving, the three girls exited the bathroom without Galinda. They all glared in Elphaba's direction, but the green girl didn't look back.

"Poor Miss Galinda..."

"She doesn't deserve this..."

"It's disgusting..."

She slowly rolled her neck from side to side, listening to the vertebrae crack. Elphaba focused on her breathing, trying not to let those girls get to her. She had been prepared for the reactions of the students, but this new roommate development was a little more than she could handle.

Suddenly the bathroom door burst open, flying open so fast that it collided with the wall. Looking up, a little startled, Elphaba watched as Galinda stormed into the dorm room. Her eyes were red with unshed tears, but she would not let her new 'friends' see her cry. Without so much as looking at the girl, Galinda approached her bed and stood there.

Elphaba watched carefully, seeing this odd girl's shoulders shake with rage. The air was so tense, she feared the explosion that was to come.

"This is your fault!" Galinda growled, turning to face Elphaba. Now the tears were flowing down her face and staining her porcelain skin with dark, wet paths. "If you had registered on time…!"

The half sentence lingered in the air.

Her dark brows drew together as Elphaba stared at the girl. She had never felt such a strong reaction to someone. It was like her body was physically rejected Galinda. Maybe this is what it was like for other people to see her.

Galinda attempted to hold back sobs, but her eyes were burning. "You've ruined me! My reputation!"

Elphaba raised her brows as Galinda lingered by the bed. She couldn't see why this girl was so upset. It was true, the situation was far from ideal, but no need for a show as Elphaba saw it.

"You disgusting toad..."

"Shut up, you stupid girl," Elphaba snapped, cutting the girl off. Galinda stared at her, completely in shock that the toad had spoken to her. For a moment, she couldn't even process that someone had cut her, Galinda Arduenna, off.

"You think yelling at me is going to change anything? I'm hardly happy with this situation, but you don't see me crying. Dry your silly tears and tell someone who cares."

They didn't talk for three weeks.
