Diary: Week of 14/05: Studying, Dungeon, Films, & Slimelight
Monday I got my university results as mentioned on a previous entry. As mentioned on previous entry, they're not what I wanted, and I'm a bit disappointed with myself, but they are still a good grade, and I should still be getting a 2.1 at the end of the day, so not much to complain about.
I actually went straight home after that. I could have turned up to my Imagination and Self-Conciousness lectures, but they tend to be a waste of time. If the lecturer has anything worthwhile to say she's just not very good at saying it, so it looks like I may have to work things out on my own.
Got some work done in looking through Kierkegaard's Fear and Trembling however, and worked out some possible exam questions.
Tuesday I attended a Kierkegaard lecture and came home, but ended up getting precise little done. Instead I spent a lot of time trying to work out travel weekends for this weekend as
elegy_of_flames wanted to go up to London, but then there were complications in buying returns in groups because we won't be coming back at the same time, et cetera. Given that this continued into the morning, I ended up screwing up one ticket, but thankfully found someone to palm it off on.
Wednesday I had some fun working out what I needed for the exams. There's a section in this entry on that.
I went to Dungeon that night. Bizarrely I got ided on the way in, second time in the last couple of weeks (Unit 22 ided me as well). The night was pretty sparse with regards to people, it was fortunate for the small number of people there. Both
girgoescrazy and
elseware were there, although I didn't catch them much (I think
elseware felt the same way about the night as me). Toby and
ophelia_machina were also there, which was good.
Most of the other people there that I knew were more so people I just knew, rather than anyone I'd invite out or choose to spend time with per se. Bit dull really. Needless to say, I left for home early.
Thursday I had another Kierkegaard lecture, and then came home. Read through Fear and Trembling completely, whilst reading through sparknotes again to try and make sure I've got at least the basics sorted out. I'm not sure I feel ready to take the exam yet, but I think I'll get there in time. Not sure what to think about the Imagination and Self-Conciousness exam though... :o/
Unfortunately I couldn't sleep much that night, don't know why. Is annoying because
Elegy_of_Flames was arriving not long after noon the next day. Still, the few hours I did get seemed enough and
Elegy_of_Flames was tired as well, so wasn't so much of a problem.
Was a bit of a sleep day, but we still managed to get through a couple of movies that evening. We watched The Last Unicorn first, which is brilliant. It's odd how great it can be watching old cartoons you've not seen since you were a kid; Last Unicorn is great :o) After that we watched Ultraviolet, which I had caught bits of at Slimelight before. It's kind of fun from a special effects vantage, but is completely plotless.
Saturday we got on a coach up to London were we went straight to Slimelight after stopping to have something to eat. I had seriously considered going to Invocation before Slimelight, but I don't think it would be
Elegy_of_Flames's thing and we would likely have to leave early anyway, so I thought we might as well go straight to Slimelight and I'd take the opportunity to go to Invocation some later date.
Slimelight turned out to be quite good. Met up with
littlecyberalex and Johnie down there, and the music was better than I might have guessed and I managed to find excuse to dance on the second floor. Met a new friend called Tania who lives in London. I ended up leaving early and leaving
Elegy_of_Flames to her own devices whilst I spent the rest of the morning with Tania, which turned out to be a little unfortunate as
Elegy_of_Flames morning didn't go so well and I suspect she might have been a bit more easily contented had I been there, but I guess it's hard to know these things in advance really.
Ironically I missed my coach in the morning anyway, I'd gotten to the station at ten just in time to see the coach leave :o/ I'd already booked new tickets to Southampton before working out that
Elegy_Of_Flames might have wanted to see me as well, but I guess that's life being awkward again.
I then slept through most of Sunday, and am now awake. I don't think I have lectures on Monday now, but I guess I ought to drop in to check, and otherwise get my study hat on whilst
Elegy_of_Flames is away.
University: Exams and Mathematics...
I hadn't thought of working out what I need in this way, but it seemed obvious once my brother mentioned it in passing...
100 marks in perfect result
40 from the first year
8 units at 5 marks a unit
60 from the second year
8 units at 7.5 marks a unit
Calculate how much of the perfect mark I got by taking the mark I actually got as a fraction of one-hundred, and then applying the fraction to total possible mark.
First year I got an average of 65
0.65 of 5 is 3.25, 3.25 x eight units is 26
First year is worth 26 marks
First semester of second year I got an average of 69
0.69 X 7.5 is 5.175, 5.175 x four units is 20.7
First semester of second year is worth 20.7
Coursework average for second semester is 61.5
0.615 of 7.5 is 4.6125, only one unit thus mark is the same
Coursework is worth 4.6125
Work thus far worth: 51.3125
Dissertation (two units) worth:
at 40: 6
at 50: 7.5
at 60: 9
at 70: 10.5
at 75: 11.25
at 80: 12
Exams worth:
at 40: 3
at 50: 3.75
at 60: 4.5
at 70: 5.25
at 75: 5.625
at 80: 6
If I get a 60 for my dissertation, then I have a 2.1 already
If I get a 50 for my dissertation, then I will need a 34 at exams
If I get a 40 for my dissertation, then I will need a 54 at exams

Collective Ignorance
02 May 2007
As I wandered about Whitby last weekend taking in the sites, sounds, and on occasion, smells of the Whitby Gothic Weekend I began to ponder what exactly such a meeting of goths should be called. A 'group' of goths seems far too mundane; you can have a group of anything. Perhaps then a flock of goths? Or even a school or gaggle (I like the alliteration of the last one).
Finally, after far too much deliberation on the subject, I decided that 'a haunt of goths' seemed somewhat appropriate*
But what then of other subcultures? A foundry of metalers? A mash of ravers? And if you can have a murder of crows, then why not a suicide of emos?
... One can only hope.
*Incidentally this would make Leipzig the most haunted place in the world.
