I think picking out the small group of women who did something about it kind of misses the point I was making. The suffrage women actually shows my point ( ... )

Ancient Greek Patriarchy/Matriarchy/Egalitarianism wight1984 October 31 2006, 18:07:48 UTC
I don't want to get too imbedded in the issue of Ancient Greek gender roles if possible, feels very much like a side issue. I think it's enough to note the ambiguity of 'Ancient Greece', and to note that when a person refers to 'Ancient Greece' they are not referring to any one society, nation, culture or even any one era. Enough to say that many Ancient Greek cultures were very partriarcal, including Athens during it's philosophical age which is often taken as archetypical for Ancient Greek culture. I think this in itself suggests heavily that patriarchy predates Christianity, and was also seen in other pagan religions than Judaism.

Of course, the above is more easily shown just by looking around at the various patriarchal pagan cultures seen in non-European continents. Patriarchy may not be universal, but it's very common all over the globe including in areas where Christianity has not touched.

As noted, very much a side-issue in any case.

Female Enpowerment wight1984 October 31 2006, 18:08:29 UTC
"So do you feel that women need to re-educate themselves so they are all strong? I think that as long as there are guys telling them not to be it would be a pointless exercise. I think lots of women have already done so. I know lots of strong women whom have my admiration and respect and whom I consider either my equals or my superiors. Of course, this is not a black and white issue, some women are more succesful than others in throwing off weak female identity archetypes, others indulge in those archetypes to differing extents ( ... )
