Diary: Week of 08/12: Metal, Goth, STIs, parties, and cake
I was amused at work when I was asked to confirm a rumour that I was in a metal band :o) There seemed to be a bit of genuine surprise when I told them that I didn't listen to metal.
Not the first time I've been asked (randomly) whether I'm in a band at work, or that assumed that I spend my time outside of work head-banging to loud heavy music :o/
Still, it wasn't as strange as on Friday morning.
Normally when I'm down at the GUM clinic for an sti check-up I just spend my time waiting by staring into space or reading, but by sheer coincidence I managed to bump into two people I knew :o/
First was someone who used to work at RBS but who I'd never spoken to and turned out to be one of these people who is curious about what 'Goth' is but manages to be completly naive and ignorant about it, thus making any cultural reference I could give meaningless... :o/
If it wasn't for the fact she was foreign, and I suspect non-European, I'd have have taken asking me what Goths believe and whether it was a religious thing to mean she was just somewhat dim or else just winding me up, she seemed genuinely surprised to learn that it's essentially a grouping of music scenes. Guess it hard to believe that people are that unaware of alt culture these days.
Excusing that conversation to go into the male seating area I then managed to bump into the current partner of an ex-girlfriend by complete coincidence... bit of a bizarre day really I guess.
I eventually was asked to come in for the tests and asked whether a somewhat nervous and sheepish looking medical student could sit-in, poor guy! :oP Got to be a bit weird mind... I'd find it a bit uncomfortable in that position myself :o)
Woman examining me was apparently updating their records onto the computer so I got even more questions than normal. I did initially attempt to be honest and forthcoming about my sexual habits but the woman asking the questions but she seemed to be making an odd number of monogamous assumptions and I couldn't be bothered to argue the point, makes no difference to me. Bit strange though, even excluding poly people there must be a lot of people out there who cheat on their partners or sleep around who might use the clinic.
Sti examination went mostly as normal, with the typical putting of dry cottonbuds in places where they are not comfortable and such like but also with an additional 'rear entry' examination that I've not been asked to do before, but more importantly than all that... I was actually offered free condoms for the first time since I've been there (always feel a bit weird and cheeky asking). Score :oD
Then I toddled off home and started baking a cake for
Elegy_of_Flames's birthday party on the Saturday :oD Kay came down in the evening and we watched lost :o)
_phoenixrising gave us a lift up to London on the Saturday, we tried to head off for six but fate was trying to get at us and there were a few delays :oP Saying that, the biggest delay was an arranged one... sitting in the car whilst
_phoenixrising was at a banquet. We mostly kept ourselves amused by pestering each other *nods* :o) Had thought about taking my laptop with me so we could watch Lost, but had decided it would be too awkward :op
Rest to trip to London was surprisingly easy though, with
Lacuna_Raze putting her best efforts into map-reading and helping us find
Elegy_of_Flames's place very quickly and easily :oD
Night comprised mostly of drinking and such things before me and
Lacuna_Raze collapsed onto a double-bed in a manner reminiscent of the Hastings party (yay, double bed!) :oD
Morning involved eating the cake I'd prepared, which I am told was even more chocolatey than the last :oD (can't be anything other than a good thing in my mind) :o)
Didn't end up back in Southampton until very late, but the pair of us still managed to squeeze in a few more Lost episodes :oP
