I just spent Saturday morning in work. It was dead quiet, and I got to sit next to a colleague I don't know so well. We got talking about random stuff. Dave must be about the same age as me, as he was a fan of all the same kids' shows and had a Spectrum as a kid. Apropos of this, he wrinkled his brow and asked whether I'd ever played the Spectrum game of Knightmare. I said sure, I had that one. He confessed he'd never managed to get out of the first room, and was convinced they never coded any more of the game. This made me laugh a lot. I'd spent ages trying to do anything in that ****ing room and eventually gave up in disgust and played something else. Years later I met
hammerhydra - also a fan of Knightmare and the Sinclair Spectrum, only to discover he'd never got out of that first room either. I think the fact that all three of us remember that specific bit of that specific game more than 20 years later says something about it.
I wonder what the knack was. Maybe it just had an incredibly steep learning curve, or maybe like so many other Spectrum games it was just broken. I might have to look for a playthrough on Youtube.
