A tempest in a teapot after all.

The hubby ended up perched on the railing three stories up shooting pictures of Kahului harbor. He called me but the phone didn't work. I watched from the living room the live coverage, a dog on either side and doing lots of nervous petting. When it was evident nothing major was going to happen, the energy I'd been burning all day evaporated and I crashed into a black hole nap.

We have a party for my sister's birthday tonight, a nice surf -n-turf dinner for 25 that I was not sure was going to happen, so now it's back on and did I mention, the house is really clean? I mowed too. And now, the decorations: iridescent swirly things that hang from the lights, and confetti in iridescent swirls, and silver ribbon on the backs of the chairs, a tiara for my sister to wear and lots and lots of food.

I had to go up and hit the cash machine for the babysitters we've hired to ride herd on the 12 or so children, and fortunately the machine still had money. THe parking lot was nuts, and of couse all the ice was sold to people who were preparing for the power to go out. It was entertaining watching the stream of pickup trucks out of the community park and back down the hill, where hundreds of people gathered to wait out the tsunami warning, bringing coolers and umbrellas, footballs, kids and pets and turning it into a one big community gala. I love that about Hawaii. There's a festive, casual feeling even to our natural disasters, like how bad could it possibly be on a beautiful sunshiny day on Maui?

And fortunately, this time we didn't have to find out.
