Another part of my childhood gone.

I sold my grandmother's second house today.  We needed the money to help pay for my grandmother's care at her swanky 'golden years hotel'.  (All kidding aside, it IS pretty damn nice.  She's got a two bedroom apartment, all utilities paid, an 300 cable channels.  Plus all meals.  AND an on call nurse and doctor.  Oh, and all her meds are included.)

I don't mind selling this house, though I do have a lot of memories here.  My grandmother has two homes.  One in Rotan and one out in the country.  She spent most of her time in the 2nd one, which was closer to her friends and activities and stuff.  I would mow the yard during the summer, and work in the backyard.  You can't see it in the photo, but all that grass used to be gardens.  the area by the tree were flowers, everything else were vegetables.  That big tree there is a pecan, and I can't tell you how many times I would climb up there and just hide from the world.

The front yard wasn't much to look at.  People didn't waste water on front yards, saving it instead for the above mentioned backyard.  Still, I had a lot of fun there.

I put the house up for sale Monday afternoon, right before I drove back to Houston.  Ilistedt the askng price down as $45k.  Not bad, considering it's only a 2 bedroom, and no central A/C.  I didn't think I would get it, but hey, a guy can try, right?

Evidently not 2 hours after I left, a gentleman came by, and asked to see it.  The neighbor across the street let him in, and he looked it over, and sent out his foreman that afternoon.  By the time I got home Monday night, I had a firm offer for the amount of $55k, if I agreed to leave all the appliances and the a/c units.  No problem there!  The guy's father evidently lives in Rotan and didn't want to move.  The son (who made the offer) can't stay in Rotan and run his business, so he bought the house for the nurse he hired to watch after his dad.  The guy said if I sold it as is, by the ned of the month, he would give pay the $55k.  If I agreed to leave all the dishes and furniture, he would up it to $65k.  I can't leave all the furniture, since I want some of it, and there are some really nice hand crafted peaces my grandfather's and his dad had made, but we agreed for $59k.

Which is great, but also bad.  'cause now I have to drive back up there next weekend in order to haul off furniture and sign the deeds.  I haven't put my grandparents' main house up for sale yet, and I won't have to now.  So long as I make the tax payments every year, it'll stay mine.  The problem is going to be the upkeep for it.  Not quite sure how to keep vagrants or squatters from moving in, but I'll figure something out.

Oh, and here are two pictures.  The house ain't much, but it was fine as a secondary home in the 'city' (lol, calling Rotan a city...I crack myself up.)

I'll miss it.

rotan!
