Women like it when you notice the little things, I've learned. A new top they're wearing. A new pair of earrings. Just the small (to us) changes they have made. A haircut qualifies as a change. It is also something most women like to be complimented on. I learned this when I was a young boy, growing up in a town with more women than men.
What I did NOT know was that women who don't know you, don't really like the compliment. Case in point time!
I was alone on the elevator this morning, when I heard a young woman say 'Hold the door!'. Being the gentleman that I am, I shoved my foot back between the closing doors, and triggered them to open back up. The owner of the voice stepped on, and lo and behold, it's the cute blonde girl from the 9th floor. I'm secretly pleased by this, as she is quite easy on the eyes, is single (I know, because our receptionist knows every woman in the building), and she has a great laugh (learned from hearing her in the building's cafe).
Something is different about her. Ah ha! Her hair was cut. Being the gentleman, I comment on it to her. "You got your hair cut!" She looks over at me, and gives me this little smile. Only it's not a smile of happiness. It's that smile girls sometimes give when they're not sure about the situation they're in. The 'OMG, am I in the elevator with a stalker? Play it cool, play it cool, you can do this girlfriend.' smile.
I realize what I said probably sounded bad, or stalkerish, so I quickly clarify. "I mean, it was past your shoulders last week, when I saw you on the elevator, and now it's just above your shoulders." Oh crap, too much detail. Quick, gotta save it. "I'm totally sounding like a stalker right now, I'm sorry. I'm completely harmless, I assure you. You can ask my office." Damn it. Now I sound stalkerish AND pathetic.
I was really happy when the doors to my floor opened up and I was able to escape. Now to just hide at my desk, and pray that she just lets the whole thing go.
