Miral was not stupid, in fact she was used to hearing how
intelligent she was. So when she saw Seven entered their quarters Miral quickly
wiped at her eyes and jumped up from the sofa.
“Miral.” Seven said as she stopped in front of the small
teenager.
“Seven.” Miral nodded and then tried to move past the
blonde.
Miral heard Seven sigh deeply and then felt two strong hands
clasp her shoulders and halt her attempt to flee.
Miral glanced upwards and instantly looked away when she saw
the concern written all over Seven’s face.
“This must stop.” Seven sighed with a shake of her head.
“I don’t know what you are talking about.” Miral said as she
tried to wriggle free of Seven’s iron tight grip.
“Your Mother has stopped me from talking to you on several occasions.
She is convinced that you will see the error of your ways.”
“And you don’t believe that I take it?” Miral asked.
“I am well versed in the habits of Torres women. Your Mother
is extremely stubborn, and you share this trait.”
“Does that mean yes?”
Seven tilted her head left and then answered, “I believe
that you will ‘stick to your guns’ even if it is hurting the people you love.
Even if it means hurting yourself?”
“I’m not hurting anyone.”
“You made your Mother cry.”
“Is that supposed to make me feel guilty?”
“No, I also know that you have been crying.” Seven said as
she gently slipped her fingers under Miral’s chin and raised her tear stained
face.
“I haven’t.” Miral denied.
Seven’s implanted brow rose, “Your eyes are red and puffy
and I heard your sobs as I approached our quarters.”
“I wasn’t crying about that.” Miral sniffed as she looked
away from Seven’s intense gaze.
“What were you crying about?” Seven asked concerned.
“I stubbed my toe.” Miral mumbled the first thing that came
into her head with a shrug of her shoulders.
Seven raised her implanted brow again and Miral could tell
she didn’t believe her. Miral internally swore at herself for telling such a
lame lie. Even Neelix would have seen through that one.
Silence starched out as Miral berated herself for her lack
of sharpness. Just as she was about to try and get away from Seven. Miral heard
Seven take in a deep breath.
“You believe that we are trying to replace you.” Seven
stated as she stared at the dark head of hair that was bowed in front of her.
Miral felt her shoulders tense as Seven’s words assaulted
her ears. She didn’t want to talk about it. “So?”
“We are not.” Seven said firmly.
Miral shrugged her shoulders, “If you say so.”
“You are irreplaceable.” Seven told Miral.
Miral twisted her lips and kept her head bowed.
Seven sighed, “Your Mother is upset.”
“So you just said.” Miral replied with a touch of petulance.
“Will you not speak to her?” Seven asked.
Miral lifted her head and narrowed her eyes. She did wanted to
talk to her Mother, but she didn’t see what it would solve.
“To say what?” Miral asked her voice rising.
“Anything.” Seven snapped.
“You want me to tell her how happy I am?” Miral laughed harshly
“Why are you unhappy? We both love you dearly Miral. We did
not do this to make you unhappy.” Seven said her voice containing her anguish
at the situation they all found themselves in.
“Then why did you do it?” Miral asked.
“We wanted to create something from the love with share.”
“And I can never be that.” Miral swallowed hard.
“Miral that is not true.” Seven said firmly with a strong
shake of her head, “We love you, you know that don’t you?”
“I know.” Miral reluctantly admitted. She did know that she Mother
and Seven loved her. Her Mother had put up with her mood swings and her
childish behaviour for years; so had Seven and they both continued to do so.
“You do not have to say that you are happy about your Mother’s
pregnancy, but at least inform your Mother that you are talking to her.”
“You would want me to lie?” Miral asked.
Seven frowned, “yes.”
“I never stopped
talking to her.” Miral admitted with a shake of her head.
Seven sighed deeply, “Then why do you avoid her every
attempt to talk to you?”
Miral shrugged, she didn’t know why she did it.
“I will repeat my earlier statement, this must stop. I will
not allow my wife and my daughter to destroy their relationship.” Seven
demanded.
“What did you say?” Miral asked her eyes wide, she couldn’t quite
believe what she had just heard Seven say.
“I will not allow you...”
Miral interrupted, “No, what did you call me?”
“My daughter.” Seven said.
“Why did you say that?” Miral asked.
Seven shook her head, “Because that is how I see you.”
“You do?” Miral asked softly.
Seven nodded her head firmly, “Yes!”
Miral twisted her lips. She could hardly believe what she
had just heard. Seven had called her daughter. She knew that Seven didn’t say
things she didn’t mean. Miral felt her heart hammer within the confines of her
chest. If Seven said that, then that was how she saw her.
“But you will both have a new kid soon.” Miral said softly.
“Yes,” Seven nodded with a small smile “and you will have a sister,
and you will still be our daughter.”
Miral swallowed hard as she felt herself enfolded within Seven’s
arms. As she rested her head upon Seven’s chest Miral lost control and allowed
her tears to flow.
“I was just scared.” Miral admitted after a few minutes.
“I know.” Seven said as she gently stroked Miral’s hair.
Miral took in a shuddering breath, “It was a knee jerk
reaction to say the things I said.”
Seven pushed Miral away slightly and wiped the tears away
from her eyes, “It was an understandable reaction.”
Miral nodded even though she knew that Seven was lying, she
had over reacted.
“He called me a brat.” Miral said as she remembered the
words her Father had said to her.
“You’re Father?” Seven asked with a touch of anger.
“Yes, he was right though. I am a brat.” Miral said as another
wave of tears escaped her eyes.
“You were upset.” Seven said firmly
“I’m sorry.” Miral apologised as she dipped her head.
“I know” Seven said as she lifted Miral’s head, “I accept
your apology.”
Miral bit her lip, “I didn’t want to hurt both you and Mother.”
“I am aware of this.” Seven smiled sadly.
“Is Mother mad at me?” Miral asked tentatively
Seven shook her head, “She is concerned.”
“Disappointed you mean.” Miral mumbled.
“No!” Seven replied, “B’Elanna is not disappointed in you,
neither am I.”
“Your Father did not upset you did he?” Seven asked as she
cupped Miral’s face.
“No, well no more that he usually does.” Miral admitted, “I
didn’t mean those things I said to Mother after he had spoken to me.”
“I know.”
“I am an idiot.”
Seven frowned, “You are not an idiot, and your theory of
improving the warp core’s efficiency is impressive. Your Mother is considering
applying the theory, with some modification.”
“Really?” Miral asked her attention momentarily focused upon
something else.
“Yes, I do not lie.”
“I know,” Miral nodded, “but that’s not what I am talking
about. I’m an idiot when it comes to dealing with people. I just get angry; Mother
sets me off more than anyone else."
“It is because you care for her, you love her. You are
impulsive and prone to fits of irrational anger. B’Elanna understands this.” Seven
smiled as she ran her fingers though Miral’s soft hair. “You are certainly your
Mother’s daughter.”
“You will have to put up with three of us soon.” Miral smiled
shyly and felt it broaden as Seven returned it.
“Perhaps the baby will not inherit your Mother’s Klingon
temper.” Seven said her smile still firmly fixed in place.
Miral shrugged, “don’t count on it.”
“I am sure I will survive.” Seven said as she gently patted Miral
on the shoulder. “Your Mother will be late this evening. Perhaps you can help
me prepare our evening meal.”
“Sure, I’d be glad to help.” Miral said with a nod as she
allowed Seven to steer her towards the kitchen. She knew when her Mother came
home they would have to talk, and for the first time in week Miral was looking
forward to it.
