“This seat taken?”
Miral tensed at the familiar and hated voice that assaulted
her ears. Miral felt her teeth smash together as she bit down hard to restrain the
anger that always came when her Father was near.
“Yes.” Miral ground out.
“Did you say no?” Tom asked his voice mischievous, “Well
thank you for offering it to me, how kind.”
“I said it was taken.” Miral barked.
“I know you said it wasn’t taken.” Tom laughed as he plopped
down in the seat across from his daughter.
Miral watched as her Father picked up his cutlery and
started to dig into the food that was piled high upon the plate in front of
him. Miral pulled her lips back in disgust. She didn’t want to sit near him.
Making a decision Miral placed her palms upon the mess hall
table and started to push herself up.
“Sit down!” Tom said firmly.
“Fuck you.” Miral replied.
Tom smiled at the language and shook his head, “Just sit
down Miral.”
Miral begrudgingly obeyed and sat down. She continued to
watch her Father eat for a few more seconds before she lost it.
“What the hell do you want?”
“Cant a Father talk to his Daughter?” Tom asked sarcastically.
“Not when said Daughter hates his guts.” Miral responded
with a twisted grin.
“You wound me my child.” Tom laughed as he pressed a hand to
his chest.
“Cut the bullshit, what do you want?” Miral asked as she
crossed her arms over her chest/
“I heard your Mother is pregnant.” Tom said as he glanced up
from his plate.
Miral felt her hearts constrict at Tom’s comment. He had
been quite lately; he had stayed away from her Mother and Seven after they had
gotten married. Still Miral wouldn’t let him try to ruin the only good thing
her Mother had in her life, their family.
“So?” Miral shrugged as she tried to appear unaffected by
her Father’s comment.
“I also heard you aren’t taking it to well.” Tom smirked
“I’m taking it just fine.” Miral growled.
“Is that so?” Tom asked with a laugh.
Miral nodded firmly, “Yes.”
“If you say so.” Tom said with a shrug of his large
shoulders before he went back to his breakfast.
“You know you should lay off the fatty foods.”
“Concerned for my health daughter dear?” Tom asked as his
face twisted in to an over exaggerated look of shock.
“No,” Miral snorted, “for Voyager. You keep eating and we
won’t be able to move soon.”
“I am sure Voyager is touched by your concern.” Tom laughed.
“Mother and Seven are happy, we are all happy. One big happy
family and you won’t mess that up.”
Tom sighed heavily as he placed his knife and fork back upon
his plate, “I’m not trying to mess that up.”
“Yeah?” Miral asked disbelievingly.
Miral watched as her Father shook his head and glanced
around the sparsely populated messhall. He twisted his lips, ran a hand through
his hair before he looked back towards Miral.
“I’m here because B’Elanna asked me to talk to you.” Tom
said seriously.
“Mother wouldn’t.” Miral said as she shook her head.
“She did.” Tom nodded
his head.
“You’re lying.” Miral spat.
While she didn’t want to believe what he was saying, deep
down she could tell he was telling the truth. His normal sarcastic and playful
tone had gone and a seriousness that was so seldom seen had over taken the man in
front of her.
She knew that she had been miserable and sullen for the past
two months, and she had refused to talk about her Mother’s pregnancy to anyone.
Even Jenny had given upon asking her to talk to her Mother and Seven. Miral
felt hurt that her Mother would consort with the enemy and talk to him about
her.
“No, I’m not.” Tom sighed.
“Why would she do that?” Miral asked confused. She didn’t understand
why her Mother would go to the man she knew she hated.
“She is concerned about you.” Tom told Miral.
“So she asks you to talk to me?” Miral laughed harshly.
“I know I’m an arsehole most of the time, but I do care
about you to Miral.”
“You're so full of it.” Miral spat as she slammed her hands
upon the mess hall table.
“You used to love me so much.” Tom said sadly, “You were
daddy’s little girl.”
Miral shook her head as she Father’s words. “I was five.”
“If only I could go back, I would do things differently.”
Tom said with a sad smile.
“You can’t go back!” Miral exclaimed.
“No,” Tom conceded, “neither can you when this is all over.”
“What are you saying?” Miral asked, although she knew what
he was trying to say. He was saying what everyone else was afraid to say to
her.
“You're making a mistake by being such a brat Miral.”
Miral’s eyes widened in outrage, she couldn’t believe he had
just said that to her.
“I’m not a brat.” Miral insisted.
Tom simply raised his eyebrows, “You should be happy for
your Mother and Seven.”
“What like you are?” Miral countered.
Tom laughed and then shook his head in defeat. “I have taken
a long hard look at myself over the past year Miral. I know I’m not perfect,
and I know I can be an idiot some of the time...”
“Most of the time.”
Tom rolled his eyes at the B’Elanna like interruption, “as I
was saying... I can be foolish. What happened between your Mother and I is something
I shall always regret. I lost everything. I lost the only woman I have ever
really loved, and I lost you.”
“Is this supposed to make me feel sorry for you?” Miral
asked with a sneer.
“God Miral no!” Tom chuckled, “It’s supposed to make you see
that you are hurting your Mother and Seven. It’s supposed to make you see that
you ate hurting yourself.”
Miral folded her arms across her chest and looked away from
Tom. “You don’t care about me.”
“I do care, I might not show it, but I do care.”
“Why don’t you leave me alone?” Miral demanded to the sound
of her Father’s laughter.
“No way kiddo.” Tom said with a huge smile.
“I could go and steal a phaser again.” Miral said with a
glare.
Tom snorted, “I don’t think the Captain would appreciate
that.”
“No, probably not.” Miral sighed.
Miral watched as her Father picked up his fork and started
to pick at the remaining content of his plate. Silence stretched between them
and Miral felt a growl rising in her throat.
“They aren’t replacing you.” Tom said softly breaking the
silence.
Miral felt her eyes widen, “What did she tell you?”
Miral clenched her jaw tight. She couldn’t believe her
Mother would be so stupid to tell him what she had said. Miral’s feelings hurt
and betrayal increased.
“Calm down,” Tom held up his hands to stop the explosion of
anger he could see building. “She just told me to talk to you. I can guess the
rest, I know you think I’m stupid kiddo but I’m not.”
“They are.” Miral said as she admitted her fear to her Father.
Tom sighed and shifted in his seat, “they are not. I know
this must be hard for you.”
“What do you know?” Miral glared.
Tom shrugged his shoulders, “I was an only child. I can
imagine how I would have felt if my parents had decided to have another child
when I was a teenager, and considering the teenager I was I doubt I would have
reacted well.”
“This isn’t about you.”
Tom nodded his head in agreement, “No it isn’t it’s about
you Miral.”
“Just leave me alone.” Miral said and she swung her legs out
from under the messhall table.
“They aren’t doing this to hurt you Miral.” Tom told his
daughter.
Miral shook her head.
“I’m surprised you’re so calm about this.” Miral said as she
tried to deflect the conversation away from her once more.
Miral watched as she Father smiled in understanding.
“I will admit, it hurts that your mother has moved on, but it’s
my fault. I had everything and threw it all away.” Tom paused and smiled sadly
at his daughter. “I stand by what I said. They aren’t doing this to hurt you. ”
“Then why are they doing it?” Miral asked.
“To celebrate their union, to celebrate their love, that’s
the reason that B’Elanna and I had you. We loved each other and we wanted to
give that love to you. I know I have failed in showing you that love Miral, and
I’m sorry.” Tom said as he swallowed hard.
“Sorry isn’t good enough.” Miral told her Father.
“I know.” Tom smiled sadly, “Don’t be like me Miral, don’t
have regrets, and don’t be like your Mother was, don’t let your anger rule you.
Go home and talk to your Mother and Seven.”
“I’ll do what I want, not what you tell me to do.” Miral
said defiantly.
“How did I know you were going to say that?” Tom laughed.
“Screw you.” Miral spat as she pushed herself up from her
seat.
Miral stood and started to move away from her Father.
“Miral?”Tom called to Miral’s retreating form.
“What?”
Tom smiled, “Harry tells me you like the holodeck.”
“Yeah.” Miral replied.
Miral was angry at herself for the stab of hurt she felt
that he had had to ask about the things she liked. She knew a Father should just
know those things.
“Maybe we could go sometime, together?” Tom asked hopefully.
Miral didn’t turn around. She just ignored his request as
she moved slowly from the messhall.
“Do you think one day you can forgive me Miral?” Tom asked
softly.
Miral glanced over her shoulder at the man she had once
adored. Part of her wanted to forgive him, part of her wanted to jump into his
arms and have him spin her around until she couldn’t walk straight. Part of her
wanted him to hold her and tell her that everything would be ok, but everything
had changed since then. He had neglected her in pursuit of his other interest. He
had stood her up when she was child; he had even threatened to press charges against
her. He had hurt her, and more importantly he had hurt her Mother. Miral wasn’t
sure she could forgive him that.
